Except the head gasket should have no passages for the intake. Air goes in the side of the head from the intake manifold directly to the intake valve. In fact, the only way coolant should be able to get into the intake would be if there is a crack in the head which could be the culprit.Your statement is true if the head gasket leak is between the coolant passages and the exhaust passages.
If you have a head gasket leak that is between the intake manifold and the coolant passages I think AF could be sucked into the cylinders when the intake valve is open and there is negative pressure in the intake manifold.
This type of leak would not allow exhaust gas to push into the coolant loop thus you would not see any increase of pressure in the system with your pressure tester but you would see AF in the exhaust. This condition could also cause hard starting.
Maybe something to consider?
Yes it does and a leak there would indicate a cracked head. but there are no passages for intake through the head gasket. Therefore, coolant could not be getting to the low pressure intake from a failed head gasket.Doesn't the head have coolant passages, intake passages, and exhaust passages? Every liquid cooled engine I have seen has this configuration.
I wasn't thinking about coolant passages in the intake manifold, only in the head itself.

I can only hope it hurts less than a new cylinder head....!Guess I will be ordering a new HE/exhaust manifold tomorrow. That is gonna hurt!
