I don’t think that it has glow plugs. It would usually be started by opening the throttle a little and cranking . The stop is the pull knob in the stairs. The toggle switch is to check the bulbs in the alarm lights in the panel and switch on the tachometer lamp. Some B panels had a push button start where you turned on the key and then pushed the button to crank it.

A photo would really help…

but my Yanmar 2GM20F, from the same era, has a key and a push button. Turn the key on and heat the alarm tone. Give it some throttle and push the button (hold it in) as the engine cranks over and starts. Don’t crank too long if she doesn’t fire Or risk potential hydro lock.

Mine also has a T-handle that is connected to the fuel cut-off on the engine…pull that handle up to stop the motor.

Yes, a photo would help. However, our 4JH2-TE does not have glow plugs. The toggles on our panel control panel lights and no push buttons. Just turn the key to start.

Look like this one? The toggle switch is for panel illumination and panel lamp check. The red knob to the left is is the engine stop, by pulling it out. Yanmar 4JH’s do not have glow plugs.

It looks like the key is marked:
Stop (not very legible).
Off
Run
Start

So, I would turn key to Start to fire it up, once running, let go of the key and it rests at the Run position.
I assume to stop the engine, turn the key to STOP. Once engine dies, turn key to Off and remove it.

BUT…I have no idea what the big red ejection seat button does…maybe the STOP setting on the ignition switch was erased intentionally because it doesn’t work (a solenoid I think) and they replaced it with a manual engine kill cable like my 2GM20 has….if so, pull the red thing to kill the engine.

The toggle switch is for the panel illumination. I assume the TEST setting turns on the idiot lights to make sure the bulbs work.

Sorry, I thought that was your photo Rick.

As someone else said, I don’t think that Yanmars have glow plugs. And if you ignition is as I stated above, there is no glow plug setting.

Set your throttle maybe 50%, turn key to START, engine turns over and starts. Release key to RUN.

Turn key to STOP (you might have to hold it a few seconds until engine dies). Return key to OFF and remove key.

Try that and see.
