With my 3GM the answer for cold starts on the Chesapeake bay has been to give it plenty of throttle. Same for the boat I used to race on. Remember you can't flood a diesel. Just be ready to throttle back as soon as it turns over.

Same problem on my 2gm and a friends 2GM both problems were the lift pump. It would leak back enough to loose prime and was hard to start, new lift pumb fixed both boats
I did read somewere recently that yanmar had a service notice about a fix for this on certain engines. Sorry I dont remember the exact. But will try to search it out and post. But there is some offical info out there
thanks again for all the great advice all... it sounds like it might be worth it to have the injectors and timing looked at, it is 31 years old. IT started today at 55 degrees but it does seem to lose prime when sitting. Im going to try something to preheat it. Since i wont have power on the water to use a hairdryer im thinking of putting those toe warmers things that chemically create heat on the injection chamber. Even if it just heats it from 50 to 70 im wondering if that makes a difference. Will advise if this trick works, i know cold starting issues is a common problem.
