Yale Whip Lock

Today I tried my had at putting Yale Whip Locks on the bitter ends of my new running rigging. Since I take the running rigging in and out of rope clutches and blocks often (trailer Sailor) I figured it would be better to have more than the melted ends.

I looked up videos on Youtube. I then tried to do the whip locks and I found it to be really easy. It is harder on smaller lines (my furler line is 3/16") but I was able to do it.

Looks good. Thank you for the tip.

Nice, loke the look of the four frap's. I have a knot book which teaches something similar....tidy looking B.O.!

My lines are older, so I struggled with getting the needle through and lining up....practice I suppose.

Heh, that just looks like the standard traditional whipping technique that I've been using for 40 years. What makes it so unique that Yale feels entitled to call it proprietary?

I believe the "yale" moniker refers to the 4 decorative "lock stiches" he applies to the actual whipping.

I rarely lockstitch a whipping in such a way. Although it looks nice. If done properly a standard whipping will stay in place indefinitely. And you don't need to mess with a needle.

BTW, APS (Annapolis Performance Sailing) is a terrific organization.

One extra thing that I did is that I lightly heated the whipping.

I like the way the lock stitches look. Either way, I am hoping that it helps keep the ends of the running rigging nice for years to come.

Frapping turns applied with a needle to lock a whipping have been S.O.P. for hundreds of years. A bit cheeky of Yale to lay claim to it, methinks.

While the frapping turns do indeed look nice, they aren't decorative... they ensure that the whipping won't unravel.

Kind of like wearing a belt AND suspenders ! So what protects the lockstitches? They are high up and more likely to wear:doh:
In the old days, when this sort of whipping was done on the only kind of line available at the time -- 3- or 4-strand -- the frapping turns laid neatly in the depressions between the strands. Even on modern braid, if the whipping is pulled nice and tight, the whipping is depressed somewhat due to compression of the line, and the frapping turns don't stand too proud of the general line surface. I've never had them wear through.

Without the added turns, on the other hand, I've had whipping unravel because it snagged on something, not because the threads wore through.

Belt and suspenders, yes... but worth it if you have the time and patience to do it right.

A needle whip is a needle whip regardless of what yale wants to call it. Being from New England I use mostly line from New England ropes. A standard old fashioned hand whip will not stand up as well as a needle whip. Anyone who has been around sailboats as long as I have 60 + years will know this.

The frapping turns on my daysailer's running rigging has been holding up well for 3 or 4 seasons now.

I don't think you can go wrong with Annapolis Performance Sailing. In my experience, they are a good company to do business with.
