Yacht Clubs

I grew up sailing on Lake Michigan and my Dad was a member of Chicago Yacht Club. The people I met as a kid (early 60's) were very good to me and taught me a love for sailing that has not waned. CYC has two facilities that are as different as night and day. Monroe St. is the more traditional up-scale (including Jackets in the main dining room), and Belmont the more relaxed. Because of the two locations you could run into people who fit just about any description that people have mentioned so far. And I guess that pretty well sums up life in general, it takes all kinds, and God knows there are all kinds out there. We don't belong to a club on Lake Lanier and we have met wonderful people who share our enjoyment of sailing. What more could we ask for. Keep looking, you will find the situations that fits your needs. And don't be so hard on the ones who enjoy the Blue Blazers, their tastes just run different than yours and mine.

I take sailing and boating as my drug of choice.

Clyde: sure you jest!?#* Not every one likes the same things in life. Someone probably STILL like Clyde too. <g> We all need different things in life to make us happy. As the fisherpeople say, "a bad day of fishing (sailing) is better than ANY day at the office". Kevin will find a nitch in the yacht club world. I don't know of anyone that thinks that everything is life is perfect. The problem with Kevins experience is that they only have one chance to make a first impression and that is the one that lasts. Kev, keep looking. Clyde, chill! Everything is wonderful, just ask me!

Enjoying this thread

I must say that I have been enjoying this thread all day long. I don't belong to a yacht club and dont't want to (I not really a joiner). But I must say that Clyde has really taken a beating today. Can't we go a little easier on a fellow sailer.

Rodney, Encinal is a very good club

Rodney, I'v been to your club and know many of your members. If I ever decide to rejoin a Yacht Club on the Bay it will be Encinal or Richmond.....

Thanks Gary and Sorry Clyde

Gary, Thanks for the compliment. Look me up when you're at Encinal next time. As far as Clyde goes, I was pretty rough on him. I can probably say that there are none of the participants on this site that would refuse to render assistance to Clyde if he needed it. Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

Egg McMuffins

The owner of the local McDonald's franchise (I guess you could call him an employee of the fast food industry) is a sailor who has donated many hours of his time and a lot of money to local youth sailing groups. I am certain Clyde wouldn't want anything to do with him, as he doesn't have Clyde's snobbish "I am better than you because I am richer than you" attitude, in spite of the fact that he is loaded. I am also certain that Clyde's club does not "accept" foodstamps in "lieu" of dues. Some people give sailors a bad name. I would join the local YC for the comraderie, but it is a little spendy for me. The initiation is $5000.00 and it is over $1000.00 per year in dues. We only have a public marina here in Santa Barbara, so moorage is not a consideration. I've found that like thinking people tend to gravitate toward one another, and I've got a bunch of close friends who not only sail together, but play with cars, motorcycles, airplanes, etc. We hold impromptu barbecues both in the marina and at Santa Cruz island. We help each other with boat, car and home projects, and somebody always has a cooler of icy brews. I suppose that while this doesn't meet the definition of a yacht club, it is one since a lot of our activities take place on or around our boats. I wore a blue blazer one time, but then the cat started to sleep on it.

The answer according to Groucho Marx

"I'd never be a member of a club that would have me as a member."

I agree that enough has been said.

There are as many different people in sailing as there are boats. Some boats I am not interested in, the same for clubs or people, but all have there place. Who knows, Clyde could be a large donor at his clubs and I'm sure somewhere down the line that club returns something to the community. I feel a little cabin fever here, let's sail and return to more pleasent conversations later this fall. Ray

P S I was at your yacht club in December and entered the lighted boat parade. NO, I didn't win it, but had fun! I will check into membership at Encinal!

Start Your Own Yacht Club

I am currently offering the starter kit for starting your own yacht club for 4 easy payments of 19.95 BUT WAIT you also get a blue sport coat and white pair of pants BUT THATS NOT ALL you also get a sailing cap with an anchor on the brim AND IF YOU ORDER RIGHT NOW I will also throw in some red fabric that you can stuff in your collar and fluff up like some kind of bird and strut around. In all seriousness, the folks in our yacht yard started their own club. It took a few years to get enough interest but there are many advantages. One is no club house!!! So no expenses with one. The second is that as a member of a club you get reciprocal agreements with other clubs for transient dock space and other helpful stuff. They hold a few parties each year where they rent a hall or hold a pig roast in the parking lot or something. They have a burgee and t-shirt and sweatshirt and the dues are like 25 bucks a year. It works out well for everybody involved. I'm not a member but an observer. dave

Two observations

(1) Let's remember to be civil... :) and, (2) no matter what you think of yacht clubs, the reciprocal dock privileges can be pretty cool. I've never belonged to one but had occasion to use those privileges and they saved my bacon a couple times...

I remember

Gary, I remember you now. I was in the parade too. I led the parade up the Alameda side. I didn't win but like you, I had a great time. BTW, we have a membership drive on - 1/2 price initiation fee, etc. If you are interested in details, e-mail me at rodney_k@hotmail.com and I'll have the membership chair contact you. Sorry Phil, this is probably not the proper use of this forum. Rod

NO NEED

i'm a bonafide "trailer sailor" and i 'dock' my vessel in it's boat barn so i get to pick and choose where i get it wet, be it the gulf coast or local/remote lakes or other coasts. since i sail mostly alone, except for my monthly full-moon romantic week-end (accompanied), i don't have the 'need' for fellow yachtsmen and their comaraderie but if i do i simply hail one on the way in/out at whatever port. i'm not for nor agin. if you have the 'need', and the bucks, go for it, sailor. thanx.

Sounds like a pretty high faluten outfit. I belong to Brown's Creek Sailing club on Lake Guntersville in N. Alabama on the Tenessee river. We just don't treat folks like that here in the south. We don't have a bar. Our club house is an old house on the lake but we love to swap lies and enjoy one another's company. I know I enjoy a comradery with other sailors that makes the entire experience more enjoyable.

Oldest Yacht Club There is

The oldest yacht club in the United States is in Springfield, Massachusetts. I am not a member but I recently took the course for my Master Mariner license there and met many of the members who were also taking the course. These are all regular people none of whom walk around with there noses up in the air. If I had a boat on the Connecticut River I would join in a heartbeat. Dave

Been there, done that...

I belonged once but gave it up. I didn't fit in, but that's not the clubs fault, they were happy, I wasn't.

paper clubs

Beware of "paper clubs", yacht clubs without facilities such as Dave described. Many people who join them in the hopes of getting reciprocal priveledges on the cheap end up discovering that the real clubs only extend reciprocity to clubs with similar facilities to their own. In California, ABC regulations prohibit the extention of bar priveledges through receprocity to clubs without bars of their own.
