Russian ships are no longer being hijacked. They heavily arm the crew and simply sink the boats leaving the surviving pirates swimming around in the ocean as they pull out of sight.

I'm a bleeding heart liberal but the engineering simplicity of this approach greatly appeals to me.
Ahhh... your finally coming around! :)

I think the current 'hostage count' of persons taken and held by the Somali pirates is something like 500+ persons (as some of the non-PC newsources are touting).

From the link posted above....

Pirates currently hold 30 ships and more than 660 hostages, not counting the attack against the Quest

which is astounding ......

OK- what we need here are a cou;le of Q yachts. Armored interior out of sight, and with a couple of thousand ping pong balls for flotation. Some well armed navy guys to do maximum damage to the pirates. A back up PT just over the horizon would be back up. A convoy system wouldn't hurt either.

If the people of Somalia keep going out in boats armed to the T and they never return, it will eventually sink (pun intended) in that by doing that, you'll never return.
I can only imagine what it is costing America to capture, have a trial and imprison pirates is.
Maybe we can learn something from Russia here.

Keep it up,

...and then there is no way anyone will get them out until there is ransom paid or they are dead. We have no clue what considerations are made to evaluate this situation, but in the warmth of my room, if it were me, I think I'd like them to try something!

The simple solution for yachts is....

.... to fly a 5-foot Russian flag on the stern!

Why in the world did this boat leave the rest of the group they were traveling with? A group of unarmed small boats, as in under 100 feet, are simply no contest to these pirates. A single boat does't even amount to pocket change.
Apparently these couples have strong faith but I haven't much faith in that being of any help.
There needs to be a solution, a final solution, and it's time for the rest of the modern nations to foot the bill!

Modern nations to foot the bill?
Come on now
Most modern people know to stay away from there. How many times does one have to tell the people to hold onto the railing when going down the stairs?
Most modern people know better than to travel to unstable countries. Are we suppose to keep bailing the stupid people out just because they are curious or want to spread the lords word? I think it's about time we let people take responsibility for their own actions. go near the edge and you'll fall.
Here in the USA they passed laws that said if you don't have insurance you must wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle. It's for your safety. No helmet, no ride. Go to ma third world country and you face the consequences for your actions. Post your own bail money
Please don't get me wrong , as I wish no ill will towards anyone. It just time to face up to ones actions and take responsibility for them.

That's fine for those who cruise for pleasure. It says nothing about the 99% of hostages who are merchant men and weren't there touring or spreading any type of word.
The world, not the US, which has been largely unaffected by the hijackings, has a responsibility to protect shipping and the normal conduct of trade. Unfortunately they have capitulated and the problem grows.

Sorry skipper, can't agree with you... this vessel was well over 200 miles offshore when attacked. It's not an american getting busted for possessing dope in some third world country... this is kidnapping and ransom of innocent people in international waters... it cannot be tolerated. If these folks had become disabled and drifted into Somali waters would it be any different? Where is the "safe" zone... has it been declared by the Somalis? Absolutely not.... they think the hostages are their insurance that we won't go in there and wipe them out.... well, they're getting away with it because we're acting like pussies........... The brits or rooskies wouldn't put up with it..no way.

Joe,
The last time I remember the Brits fought and recapture the yacht, the captain of the yacht was killed. Once the pirates board the yacht, our goal is the save the crew not see how many pirates we can kill. Believe me, if we can get separation between the hostages and the pirates, the pirates would be in the after world. There is a big difference between arming a freighter and attacking the pirates from a freighter than from a small yacht. The weapons these pirates have can easily sink a small yacht. Can someone tell me how many Russian pleasure yachts are sailing or were saved in that region. As a sailor I am angry and I feel your anger too but this problem cannot be solved by arming our yachts. We have to be more careful when sailing in that region. Sail in groups, convoys etc.

Salty... I agree with what you say... once a vessel has been captured the object is to minimize loss of life through negotiation....but then there comes a point where action must be taken. However, what I am advocating is direct action against the perps before any more vessels are taken. They aren't too careful about protecting their identity. So we send in the marines to erase the problem. We patrol the area and destroy any vessel with a machine gun on it. The big mistake was not taking direct action from the beginning while allowing the shipping companies to pay off the hostage takers. NO.... to heck with 'em... these aren't religious zealots on a jihad, these are criminals intent on making a profit. That's why you have to take names and kick ass. That's the best negotiating tactic.

...the yacht is being shadowed by a US warship, unnamed, and negotiations are in progress. One of the people close to the owners said he was advised not to discuss with the press due to the delicacy of the negotiation. I hope this is a good thing.

That's just too bad for the crew. RIP. Unfortunately, many policies in the US and around the world only change after such events. In engineering they call it Tombstone Technology. Perhaps the "right" policy will be in effect after this sad event. I, too, have little regard for the lives of pirates and think that making it deadly for them would discourage some of the pirate activity.
