Would you sail around the world in this boat? I would.

Robin Lee Graham departed on Dove at age sixteen. No one said a word other than cute references to "the most important items aboard, his schoolbooks!"

The world has changed a lot in 50 years. I was even allowed to run with sticks as a kid...

...and I never got the Red Rider BB gun for Christmas, but had my first .22 rifle for small game hunting season at 11YO. Too funny Drew!

It is the responsibility of government to prevent parents from endangering the lives of their children,
While I understand your judgement that the father of this adventurous young woman decided poorly, what makes one think that a "Government - who decides what to buy based on the lowest bid, or teaches children to the average median level" can possibly consider the capaciaties of an individual to strive and accomplish that which is extraordinary..

Looking back. I think my kids would have been far better off at sea than in the Florida public school system.

Saw her documentary. She was mature, ready. She had skills and a good boat. After circumnavigating, she chose NZ as home. She wants to live a sailing life. I am not sure she really wants to work for a living, or live to work. Good for her. I know people who have eschewed the rat race. They are happier for it whether it be on land or at sea.
I think children would benefit from a season at sea, learning the ropes, gaining confidence, living in close quarters with shipmates.
In South Florida, we had a program called Foci. I forget what it meant, but they took kids out of High School and made them sailors on a tall ship. It was a kind of boot camp for kids having difficulty with rules, and it taught them discipline... at sea. A friend of mine went through it. He later became a licensed Captain.

I think there was a movie about that...

Just watched the documentary last night on link TV, I think she was more prepared for the trip than many retirees who take it on.

I can't agree that a government had any business sticking it's nose into this. It is a parental/family decision, period. As for it turning out badly, it's a lot more dangerous for a teen in society today, than at sea.
Completely agree

More dangerous in society than at sea...

Can you support your claim with some hard evidence, as the counter argument is intuitive, and probably leaden with evidence.
You ever been to the South Side of Chicago?
