Not sure what's in that cigar, but it must be some powerful stuff judging from the smoke. ;)
A great way to unwind from the day.

That is very funny! I didn't notice that. However, it is just the house cigar and that is either a cloud or a release from a refinery or chemical plant on the carsonogenic coast on which I sail. I hope it is a cloud!

Finally got out this past weekend for a few hours. Nice 6-12 kts to relax and enjoy. Believe it or not the Admiral was very happy! BTW Jackdaw - I always enjosy seeing how your boats are rigged. I seem to learn something new everytime. Hmmm - I just noticed my stb traveler block is twisted...

Saturday was picture-perfect here in Minneapolis, 70F and 14-20 knots of SW breeze. Loaded up crew and friends for a 6 hour sail. Amazing day on the water. It didn't hurt that the crew consisted of me, my 25 year old bowman, and 3 very attractive lady sailors.

I gotta get me a Go-Pro!
Indeed. Along with video, I use the one I mount on the transom (Hero3 black) a lot to grab still images straight out of the video. Each HD 1080p frame is a decent picture, so I just find the ones like like and copy them out of QuickTime. A good mount helps too. I use a HorizonTrue mount made by a company here in Minneapolis. I beta test them. The level horizon really makes the images look more cinematic.

I finally got out this past weekend for my first sail of the season. We headed out Thursday after work towing our 5-th wheel and dinghy. By the time we got our campsite set-up it was too late to launch the boat. Friday the we had high-wind advisories. Sustained winds of 40 knots gusting to 60. That was a bit too much for my 10 foot boat so we just hung out for the day. That night we had a couple of gusts reach 70 knots. I thought it would knock over our 5th wheel but we survived. Saturday we woke up to 12 knot winds gusting to about 18. That's still a little strong for a dinghy who's only reefing system is wrapping the sail around the mast but I took her out anyway. The small lake lies North to South and the winds were out of the North. It took about 30 minutes to reach the North end of the lake and about 10 minutes to get back to the South end. I was having a ball. By noon my daughter, 7-y.o. granddaughter and some of their friends showed up. Everyone who wanted a ride in the sailboat got a turn. We even tied the inflatable canoe to the sailboat so 4 people could sail at a time. The winds slowly decreased throughout the day until it was finally dead calm at which point I removed the mast and broke out the oars. My granddaughter came along for the ride and caught a nice rainbow trout with her Minnie Mouse fishing rod. What a great start for the season.

Tell me about it! We had not even dropped off our charter guests in Rodney Bay and the phone was ringing with two more charters. Provisioning in Martinique as planned after the charter is out 'cause we've had to get south ASAP from Rodney Bay.
Where did we go wrong? From a pleasant retirement meandering around the Eastern Caribbean to being somewhere at a specific time to meet new friends. We're loving it!
Since we're sailing almost every day now, should we find a lawn to mow, a hedge to trim or gutters to clean when we can sneak it in? lol

Sooooo true...like so many other systems on a boat.
As an instructional moment from your photos...
Is the spinnaker a symmetrical type (I see a pole)? The concept of not needing a pole on an asym appeals to me greatly. Is the blue sail a genoa or more like a code 0? I see it's rigged to what might serve as a spinnaker block versus a jibe car on a track. Our boat seems to have the basics of rigging for a code 0 or asym...no pole and a messenger line in the mast for installing the spin halyard next time I go up the mast- oh yea, and a rope clutch and a...etc. etc. ha TIA

The blue sail is a Code 1. While we normally fly symmetrical spinnakers while racing, code sails (and asyms in general) are great for reaching. On boats with non-overlapping rigs, code sails help reaching where a genoa would provide more sail area, and the angle is too tight for a poled kite.

On that sail we only rig one sheet became we never gybe it. We also normally have a twing on it to help the sheeting angle, but we didn't have it hooked on in that picture. We trim it just like a genoa with telltails. It also has luff chevrons to trim to luff curl. Here's a better picture.

Hey Thanks! What range of reach will you use the code 1? 90 - 135? A code 1 seems makes sense since because the limited traveler range on the h36 with a 110% jib is really limited due to the B&R rig. More power well off the wind would be helpful and looks like less complexity for 1 or two people to fly. I wonder where the sweet spot is in size/code for the h36? More research to do!

For TWA (True Wind Angle) that range is close, maybe a bit tighter. But it of course depends on True Wind Speed, which moves the apparent all around.

The Code 1 is nice because it does not require a torsion line in the luff, which on my boat would require a small sprit (or prod) to clear the bow pulpit. Which is on the list.

Yes boats with 110% can really use the bump when reaching in light airs. The C1 (or A1 as some will call it) is an easy sail to fly, being not much bigger than a Genoa for the boat it it could fly one, two people can manage it easily. It is also very versatile, we've put it up in heavy airs while racing and it's heavy construction and smaller size make it very safe to fly.
