Typically what is the material that is used to wrap around a wooden mast to protect the mast before the bronze clamping hardware or clamps are cinched firm? The same clamps that will also hold the booms to the masts.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I have spruce spars (yawl-two) on my boat. The fittings that the standing rigging, spreader pockets, etc. are attached to, get bedded in something (boatlife or other sealant), when they are re-fastened. The reason is simply to keep water out of fastening holes. Hope this helps.

The material is on the clamp, lining it like a leather layer. Like a gasket. What is it? I believe it is to snug the clamp to the mast so it stands fast and possibly to not dig into the mast.

Probably leather. Have you searched the wooden boats forum?

Leather does sound right. Pine pitch was what was used as a bonding and sealing agent as well. Chief

On my Friend Ship I used leather between the mast and the brass clamps that held the boom goose neck. I would go to a local leather shop, and have them cut me strips of heave leather. It will last for years.
