I'm not sure what you mean, but I have spruce spars (yawl-two) on my boat. The fittings that the standing rigging, spreader pockets, etc. are attached to, get bedded in something (boatlife or other sealant), when they are re-fastened. The reason is simply to keep water out of fastening holes. The same clamps that will also hold the booms to the masts.
Probably leather. Have you searched the wooden boats forum?The material is on the clamp, lining it like a leather layer. Like a gasket. What is it? I believe it is to snug the clamp to the mast so it stands fast and possibly to not dig into the mast.
