winterizing

I've moved my well seasoned C-27 to an alpine lake - Lake Tahoe, CA. I have an old Yanmar diesel inboard. I plan to leave the boat in the water through the winter and expect subantial snow and cold weather at 5800'. Any suggestions or guidance on things to do to winterize the boat for several months of sub-freezing weather and snow?

I used to own a Yanmar - tough engines - just make sure that U fill the water intake into the engine with a good quality antifreeze -& watch the colored (enviro friendly type antifreeze) pump & pass through from the block to the stern discharge off the transom. If you're in really cold temps in the winter as it sounds, it may be advisable to drain your water muffler out completely and if you have a water heater drain it as well as a precaution. I also always drain out my entire fresh water tank & pump supply & lines every fall to prevent frost damage.

It will be in a slip. I'm told that the hull should weather the usual ice-over, but that I need to be sure that snow is removed so the weight of the accumulated snow doesn't cause it to sink. Any other suggestions?

I'm assuming that's the marina just east of Harvey's. You have electric hook up so you definitely need a bilge heater. I had ice build up in the "P" that the bilge line makes under the aft storage locker, so over a week the pump just kept adding slowly to the problem until it burned out, luckily I caught it before it got out of hand. An onboard heater set to go on under 40 degrees would be a good idea. Personally, I would love to sail on Tahoe in winter, most beautiful scenery anywhere.

Look under the aft storage locker, under those boards, the bilge hose bunches up under there similiar to a "P" trap under a sink. I'm guessing that is to prevent following swells from coming back up the bilge line past the manual pump. I was tempted to remove the excess hose but have since discovered that it does need to be there. Also, make very sure your stuffing box is in good shape. Probably a boom tent would help deflect snow accummulation. There are several people who keep big Catalina's down there who will help you out, as will the guy's at the boatyard in front of that neat little cafe.
