Couple of questions
1) I hate to admit this, but I did minimal effort to winterize my boat last winter. Like almost none. No explanation other than that it was my first year as a boat owner and I was living far from the boat. I pumped all the water I could out of my Plastimo collapsible water tank. I drained the holding tank and pumped the toilet dry. I left the toilet through hulls open. I don't have an inboard. I did not put any sort of anti-freeze anywhere.
This spring I was expecting a nightmare. But the water tank appears to be holding pressure. I filled the toilet full of water and it held it for several hours and I was able to pump it out. It's the standard Jabsco toilet.
I'm planning on rebuilding the jabsco toilet, but is there a chance there is some horrible flaw awaiting me that I won't realize until I launch the boat? I'd really rather not replace the toilet but if it's horrible suspect I only have myself to blame. As far as I can tell the water system hoses are all holding water well.
I'm paranoid somehow I screwed up the bronze throughhulls on the toilet, but logically I can't really figure out how I might have...it seems like they wouldn't be holding any water. One of them is (I believe) a tapered cone type by Grocco. They were both in the "open" position throughout the winter.
2) I have a plastic Airmar depth transducer forward. The cable runs through the bilge. I just pulled out the old cabin sole and put in new floors and a new sole. The cable got pretty beat up in the process. It appears that the cable is not removable from the airmar unit.
a) Is there a safety difference between the plastic transducer and a bronze one? Seems like it's pretty solid and low profile. For an offshore boat would you feel more comfortable with a bronze transducer?
b) any reason I can't cut the ends of the Airmar cable and splice in a new length of cable?
Thanks
Paul
