Winterizing Nightmares/Airmar Transducer Cable Replacement

Couple of questions

1) I hate to admit this, but I did minimal effort to winterize my boat last winter. Like almost none. No explanation other than that it was my first year as a boat owner and I was living far from the boat. I pumped all the water I could out of my Plastimo collapsible water tank. I drained the holding tank and pumped the toilet dry. I left the toilet through hulls open. I don't have an inboard. I did not put any sort of anti-freeze anywhere.

This spring I was expecting a nightmare. But the water tank appears to be holding pressure. I filled the toilet full of water and it held it for several hours and I was able to pump it out. It's the standard Jabsco toilet.

I'm planning on rebuilding the jabsco toilet, but is there a chance there is some horrible flaw awaiting me that I won't realize until I launch the boat? I'd really rather not replace the toilet but if it's horrible suspect I only have myself to blame. As far as I can tell the water system hoses are all holding water well.

I'm paranoid somehow I screwed up the bronze throughhulls on the toilet, but logically I can't really figure out how I might have...it seems like they wouldn't be holding any water. One of them is (I believe) a tapered cone type by Grocco. They were both in the "open" position throughout the winter.

2) I have a plastic Airmar depth transducer forward. The cable runs through the bilge. I just pulled out the old cabin sole and put in new floors and a new sole. The cable got pretty beat up in the process. It appears that the cable is not removable from the airmar unit.

a) Is there a safety difference between the plastic transducer and a bronze one? Seems like it's pretty solid and low profile. For an offshore boat would you feel more comfortable with a bronze transducer?
b) any reason I can't cut the ends of the Airmar cable and splice in a new length of cable?

Thanks
Paul

All Plastic

Most boats that I have seen offshore or not use plastic transducers and from what I have seen all Hunters have plastic transducers, maybe some special
needs may use bronze.
And yes should be able to cut and splice the depth cable and I just did it,fisfinder and sonar can't be cut and spliced.

Thanks! Why can't the others be spliced?
It has to do with electrical signals being transmitted through the wire and reducing interference between wires within the cable and other electronics.

You can learn more than you want to know about tranducers in this document from Airmar

Knot meters send either a voltage that is read by the knot meter or pulses that are read by the knot meter. Much simpler and less subject to interference.

I have spliced them successfully several times. In fact Airmar sells a small terminal strip in a waterproof? Case. $30 last time I bought one.

Re: Winterizing Nightmares/Airmar Transducer Cable Replaceme

I stripped the wire and found 3 very thin wires wrapped in something metalic looking. Do I need to find a match for the gauge? I'm just concerned I'll get the thing working but it will be innacurate.

So I spliced on new wire but I went to put on my terminals and they are much bigger than the ones that go into the depthsounder display. I'm trying to find a source for the smaller terminal connections but no luck so far. Partly because I don't know what I am looking for.

Any suggestions?
Thanks
Paul

Can anyone help me find these connectors? I'm not finding anything. Checked the boat sources and master Carr.

Alternatively, you could solder some pigtails to the blades and crimp whatever connector you want to the other ends. If you strain relieve the wire on one of those nearby nuts, you should have no problems with the solder joints failing due vibration.

You just gave me a better idea. I can cut the end of the old cable and crimp on new wire to the old wire and use the old connectors.

Still I'd like to get new crimpers if possible.

So they end up not being any standard size. For some reason Raymarine makes their own unique size. There was a nice electrician in the yard, he gave me three of them. Appears everything is working (I'm getting a clicking noise at the depthsounder).

If you are looking for them, they are here:

Just got them

Blue Heron.com
They sell all kinds of airmar transducers and the connectors,I just got the connectors about a month ago and had also purchased transducers from them.
Very cheap the killer shipping but worth it.

They are not Raymarine specific at all. They are .110 Female Quick Disconnect Insulated Terminals.... I buy them by the bag of 100 in nylon (better quality) not vinyl like Ray supplies... IIRC the ones I use are Molex or AMP....
