Local forecast: 18-24 inches of snow, winds from the north gusting to 35, temperatures upper 20"s to low 30's . This looks like it will stop most outside work for a while. More than 8" on the ground and expected to continue until late tonight or early tomorrow.

Ross, we're lucky in Greenville only rain so far. Snow down here paralyzes everything until it melts. I found out last year why. 2 inches of snow and the roads were sheer ice, like a skating rink, impossible to drive on. Cars off the road everywhere. My big heavy diesel F250 got around OK but at about 15 MPH. Best to just hunker down.

In those conditions tire chains are the only answer.

I hate to think about all those uncovered boats with possibly 24" of snow on them.

My frame went up today and the cover goes on tomorrow.

At least the snow keeps frost out of the ground

I have a client who is just beginning to construct a large indoor horse riding arena. His funding comes from the Farm Credit Service on a 10 year lease/purchase arrangement. Unfortunately if he does not have the structure up by the end of February his funding is jeopardized.

We received site plan approval earlier this month. Silt fence went in yesterday. Topsoil is supposed to be stripped & stockpiled Monday. Earth moving begins the day after that. We need to cut & fill about 5' across the site.

He is in Warren County, NJ and should only get a foot or so out of this storm. A blanket of snow will keep the ground soft and make it easier to work prior to drilling the post holes the week after Christmas.

I somehow went to bed last night in suburban Virginia and woke up in Buffalo, NY. After "moving" about 20 inches of the white stuff from here to there, I had a need for some Capt Morgan.... And the snow keeps falling.

If you keep your boat in the water in this area, I hope you have taken steps to cover it and keep the scuppers from clogging up or freezing closed. All the weight of this much snow could push a boat below the waterline, perhaps with disastrous consequences.

Think spring.

We had our big snow two weeks ago here in Baton Rouge.. we got about a half inch.. Strange in that this is the second year in a row that we've had a little snow in early December. No icy roads, thank goodness. Cold again for this weekend, it will almost freeze tomorrow night.. I was on the boat last night piddling around, and it was very nice to have a heater !..

It has been lousey in Alabama for bottom painting. Either warm and too wet or dry and too cold. Yesterday I had 3" of rain in a puddle under the boat. The whole boatyard a muddy mess. I might go to the mountains in East Tennessee and play in the snow a few days.

Lovin' a White Christmas ...

Today was one of our better days this year! It was nice having a cozy job to do indoors today, painting the dining room for next weeks company. We had snow falling outside the window and Christmas caroles playing all afternoon. We're very happy about the prospect of snow for Christmas! Our boat has been covered for over a month. I did have a disaster with our pool cover during the earlier snow storms we had a few weeks ago. I tried to build a PVC pole frame for it this year to shed the rain water. After an 8" snow storm, followed by another 4" of saturated snow and then rain, the frame collapsed and tore the bottom of the vinyl liner. We had a small flood in the backyard which is a sheet of ice now. We're happy about the snow ... everything looks so much better!

Deadhead, we've had a lot of cold weather and I'm afraid the frost may be pretty deep by now. But that doesn't usually stop construction in this area. The contractors around here will keep moving and they are hungry for work. I know a few nearby who will do the job if you are having problems but I would be surprised if you don't already have the right guys. Who are you using?

Lots of Shoveling in South Jersey

Just got back inside from shoveling a 2nd foot of snow from my girlfriend's driveway outside Hammonton, NJ. Total snow accumulation so far is about 20"-22". Blowing like mad out there. Now relaxing & watching the Rutgers game.

Scott: I conduct soil testing for septic systems regularly in Hunterdon, Warren & southern Morris counties. Not too much frost yet this year down here. Maybe an inch or so overnight a couple of days recently in northern areas. We are using a local guy from P'burg for dirt work at the equine facility. Erection will be by the Amish guys from Lancaster County, PA.

Not all that bad in Olcott

Here on the south shore of L. Ontario 18 miles from the Niagara River, we have had no snow other than flurries. The ground is clear. It has been cool - down into the teens some nights - but bearable. In a couple of weeks I will be in FLorida.

Bring it on! Here in Western Mass we haven't had a true Nor'easter since the early 90s. As a farmer, snow is good for my farm. As a skier, natural snow is so nice compared to man made. As the "groomer dude" at the local ski area, natural snow is sooo much easier to groom than man made. Even though it is real disruptive to every day life, 2 feet would be real cool.

Winter Wonderland Here

And it is still coming down about .75 inches per hour. Maybe 4 or 5 more inches since I last shoveled. While my snowmobiles languish up at Lake George!

Apple - My uncle keeps his sailboat in Portsmouth, RI. His wife, my mother and 3 other sisters were from a farm in northeastern Dutchess County, NY. My uncle is from Pittsfield, MA - he & I used to ski Bromley, Butternut Basin or Catamount the day after Christmas. I even skied Otis Ridge a time or 2 back in the late 70's.

Deadhead, wow every one you listed is still in business. Incredible for small ski areas. I make Bousquet my winter home. Hike the 600 vertical to the ridge behind my house and walk a mile north and I'm there. This is my 30th year patrolling there, at least 25 of that on Friday nights. That makes me one of Pittsfield's volunteer babysitters. It's 4:00 am and I'm out the door to groom our non storm. We've had nary a flake.
