Ed, you found a dated website!
Alice's used to be Peter's Boathouse, which does show up on the map near The Jefferson House. Surprisingly, The Windlass doesn't show up on that map, which is another landmark. The article mentions Bela's Main Lake Market, which bought to ressurect Prospect Point Marina. Legend has it that Frank Sinatra actually appeared at Northwoods early in his career (he is a Hoboken native). Lake Hopatcong was the hub of the vaudeville social set back in the day and a lot of wealthy people had their summer homes on the lake. That area by The Jefferson House used to be a railroad terminal where tourists and residents arrived from the city in the summer and they hauled ice to the city in the winter. They did a lot of ice cutting back in those days so the lake historically froze up very solid where they would run heavy sleds out there, but lately, the ice can be thin. We had a snowmobiler disappear thru an open water patch a few years ago and his body floated up in April.
We keep our boat at Lee's County Park Marina and store over the winter at Barnes.
Shemandr, Plattekill was well worth the effort to get to and the beer tasted especially good after a day of skiing there. It's a little off the beaten path, though and a long drive home after a few beers! The problem we have with Mad River is that when we go up there, Sugarbush & Mt Ellen are too good to pass up. I'll admit that I like the wide open fall line trails that are groomed. I have no need to ski in the trees or the ungroomed (unless we're talking fresh snow). I do like the drive over the pass, as an alternative way home. It reminds me of going by Arapahoe going up and over Loveland Pass.
