Buying a 30 foot catalina tall rig. It has a wing keel. I would like to hear the pros and cons versas a standard keel. I don't race. The boat will be used for bay sailing and runs from S.D. to catalina Island. Thanks

Shallow Keel

I recently purchased a 1989 tall rig winged keel and am very pleased to date. I sail in an around Lake Champlain and have have a greater comfort level with a shallow keel around island, docks, shores etc. As for speed, it will go 7-8 knots and quite stable.

I just bought an '88 tall rig, wing keel. I use it on the Long Island Sound, and I love it! I would have preferred a fin keel, but I bought it because the boat was in great shape and there are not a lot on the market around here. But since buying it I have discovered a couple of great anchorages I wouldn't have tried with a fin keel. I read in a few posts that the wing keel doesn't perform as well as the fin, and that the tall rig/wing keel is not the "optimal" config. That may be true but while I don't race seriously, but I have raced around the bouys and seem to be able to point high enough for my purposes! I have found, though, that its a little tender in higher winds...I've got to learn how to reef it before fall comes. From everything I've read it's pretty important to comfortable sailing. PS> I've been up to 7 knots but I haven't pushed it...not sure about 8 though...I would love to hear from more owners.
