I am considering buying an '88 Catalina 30' Tall Rig with a wing keel. What are the pros and cons of a wing keel over a fin keel?

Where I live the sailing is great but the bay is shallow. I have a fin keel on my '77 C30. Getting off the bottom is relatively easy and painless, I use the wind to heel the boat over and can usually sail or power off. Not possible with a wing. If you heel you'll dig in deeper.

What's the draft on your local boats?

If you have the water for a fin keel do so, but if your local boats have shallower drafts because of skinny water go with a wing keel. Another question you need to answer is to race or not to race. If you are thinking about some racing or even the simple desire to go faster than the boat next to you, you need to go with the fin keel. It's really what you intend to do with the boat. Honestly ask yourself what your true real intentions are for the boat and go with what's best for you. Don
