Boom tents work great also!

I have two. One just covers the boom but lays on the bimini so that it is full protection. I made that from nylon. If the sun is full, it burns heat right through the thin nylon and you can feel the suns heat. I also made a full cover boom tent from mast to backstay plus a foot with sunbrella. It is the most protective cover in hard sun or even a day of rain. I still sail. I sail with a furled jib and the boom tent when most guys are at the dock. I have sailed at hull speed more than once with just a furled jib. Looks like Sanford and Sons.. I don't care, I am sailing and momma is on the boat, rain or too much shine. Some mornings I set about 4'to 6' of jib out and troll a line behind while momma is in the berth. She hears me set things but that puts her to sleep as the boat has a gentle roll and the sound of water passing the boat for and hour or so. ( that took a while to make it work for her, but it does now!) Remember, everyday is different, some will turn out great, some will be sub standard. You will find that the most memorable days will be the hard ones to get through that you both worked at. Most of them will be good memories even if they were hard days! r.w.landau

George, My wife is coming to TC in July to watch my grandson

My son-in-law is in cherries and my daughter is a nurse at Munson Medical Center in TC. I will be in Elk Rapids for Harbor Days, if the plans hold true. r.w.

Don't forget the solar panel

I don't know about you...but I'd rather sail the next day than run my engine trying to charge a house battery I depleted with a fan. A solar panel makes a lot of sense on a sailboat. I had one for years on a 25 footer I kept on the mooring. It really helped me sleep at night knowing the battery running the bilge pump would be maintained. Another alternative would be to run a battery powered fan. I bought one that is about 12 x 12 inches and it is effective, but takes six or eight D cells. You can buy rechargable batteries or even run it off your 12V with an adapter (in theory...I haven't found the adapter online yet, but it is simple to build). That way you won't have to worry about your main battery. Thanks to all for the input. I had forgotten to add a wind scoop to my commissioning list. I did buy the best 12V fan I could find and have been ebay watching for a deal on a solar panel. The one thing on my dream boat list I didn't get with my S2 9.2A (which I am moving about 180 miles soon to its home port)is good ventilation. She will typically sit on a mooring, maximizing the efficacy of her large forward hatch, but the move and the summer in general, could encounter uncomfortable heat. The wind scoop is definitely a must. It is definitely worth the effort to make the Wife as comfortable as physically (and fiscally) possible. Heck, its a major reason why we moved up five feet and $200/month. She likes to be comfortable and she likes to show off the "yacht," however she still tends to have a short attention span...if you know what I mean. Bob

The solar showers are great

but I almost scalded myself to death one time. It's amazing how hot they can get in such a short time. Boom tent ha! another thing added to my list. and a water bottle that sprays a very fine mist of water.

r.w.

I will be at Elk Rapids for Harbor Days unless daughter #2 happens to pick that day to give "berth" to my grandson! Daughter #1 used to work at Munson as well. Small world! Heard that it's a bad year for cherries due to frost.

two problems with windscoops, Gary

#1--they don't work if the wind ain't blowin' #2--if it's a hot wind they blow hot air! Up here in MI it usually cools down at night. Right now lake MI is about 44 deg. so it's pretty cool out there. I have a Hella DC fan on board. The amp draw isn't bad but they are pretty small. I don't think in your case it would have made much difference.

Regarding A/C & generators...

I'm sure this topic has come up before, but it seems to be completely missing the point of sailing to a quiet anchorage to fire up the generator, close yourself up inside the boat & start the A/C, not to mention ruining the experience for anyone else nearby. Why not just stay at home until the weather cools down & let the rest of us enjoy our peace & quiet? Remember when the dirt bikes & ATV's got so bad around campgrounds that most finally outlawed them? The people that just couldn't have fun without the noisemakers could all stay together at the camps that did allow them. Too bad anchorages don't work that way. And by the way, I live on the Gulf Coast & find a windscoop & boom tent can make things quite comfortable, given any breeze at all.

Acts of God

Last weekend was about as bad as it gets heat wise. My marriage counseling advice is to eat some humble pie on the not being prepared for such God offal heat and reassure her that that was as bad as it could ever get. And once you get the Bimini installed and the fans even that situation should be a breeze. That way you paint is as a "dang honey, you are a salty old gal to take it in the teeth like that and still keep going you must be the only girl that would do that" kind of way and perhaps she will be interested in sailing when it really is not so gosh dang HOT!
