The curtains on our Catalina 30 (1980) need to be replaced. These are the ones on the metal slides. The plastic attachments with no holes make them very hard to remove and reattach to new curtains that I could make. Has anyone with an older Catalina 30 found a replacement?

curtains

hello toni mine were shot too made in 78 not much good in 2000 so what i did is i bought some sunbrella mateiral at the local fabric store took down the old slide rails bought some new curtain rods , installed the rods and took down the measurements [and paid a woman that does my sewing for me]to cut and sew the new curtains. i installed them quit easy for me at least. I'm really happy with them only the sunbrella is very stiff but I like them like that I dont open them much.if you use them alot I would recomend to use some other material other than sunbrella . after i did this i realized that the sunbrella was overkillthis is how i solved my curtain problem i hope it gives you a idea thanks for asking .jake lamode on the bay

Try washing the sunbrella in your home washing machine. A local commercial fabric store where I bought sunbrella gave me that tip. Makes the fabric more pliable

Jake, did you use plain old curtain rods top and bottom? How did you mount them? Or did you use a track system that needed attachments for the curtains? Thanks for you help. Toni

rods

Toni I used the 2 rod system a upper and lower for each window, simply drill pilot holes where each rod is to be mounted, I purchased the rods from the same fabric store., I mounted my rod holder brackets that came with the rods, snapped the rods on the brackets then measured the area to be the curtain, I drew a picture for the seamstrest so she knew what my finnish curtain should look like, the seamstrest then folded the sunbrella approx.1 1/4'' on each end for lap she sewed a lap sleave for the rods to slip into.I had to remember things like do I want the curtains to pleat like the old fabric curtains? allow access for lap for the rods to slip into? be sure to use short screws to mount the rod brackets you don't want to drill thur the body of your boat I put a piece of tape on the drill bit to aleart me to the deapt of the drill bit as I was drilling,If you make a mistake you can use marine tex to patch if necesary. believe me it sounds very simple just replace or make new curtains???? yea right/// it will take a little time and though and effort on your part. as it did for me , but when it's done you will have new curtains that you will like and that will probably out live the boat.I check this forum regularly so if you have questions I will be glad to help you when I can. curtains for a catalina 30

We bought new curtains for our 1982 30 about three years ago. Catalina will take orders. They have someone locally make them. The relpacements were only avaiable in all white and the materaial is more like a duck material than a linen. They were vey nice and fit fine. You may want to look at newer types with a different mounting.

Another Idea

An alternative to expensive replacement curtains are to make them like others are suggesting. For curtain rods you can use small teak strips (battens) 1/2"-5/8" x 1/4" mounted with brass screws and teak spacers. You maight also try light (4-5 oz.) dacron sail cloth or another fabric which resembles sail cloth for a clean nautical look.

Those little clips

I am doing my curtans right now. We picked up some fabric that matched our new int. I took the curtans down make sure to number them and mark top and bottom as well. They are all diffrent. Now get a razor knife a cut the clips off. Here is the time saver , put the clips on one every 4 inches not one every 2 inches. Still takes hours but half the clips have the time. Dont forget to mark the curtains. They are all diffrent and all tapered as well. The head and the starboads small window are not tapered and are the same on my boat. Measure all the spaceing between the clips, up and down this is where the tapper happens. Dont sew and take them down or you may have to redo your clips. That would be a real pain... It takes us about 45 min to make a cutain and over an hour on the big middle one.
