We have a windlass installed on our 11.0a. If you give me your email address I can send you a pic and more info on the modifications. I don't think I know how to send a pic over this site...sorry.

I was considering one in the V berth behind the wood panel that threatens to break my toe regularly.

Okay, here is the Lewmar windlass on the 11.0a. We had a pal who does metal working fashion the stainless steel chute you see to direct the chain from the wheel down to a small circular hole cut into the aft edge of the anchor locker door. When we actually use the windlass, we just open up the locker door for ease of raising and lowering all the chain. Little brains for the up and down buttons are mounted way up inside on the starboard side of the anchor locker...you can try to water resist these, but we have doused this locker many times and never had a short. Heavy duty wires run inside along the hull to deck joint to a special breaker at the nav station, and the engine is always running when we operate this windlass. We raise and lower our 40 lb delta with it. We also had a 1/2 inch stainless steel backing plate made for the through bolting to the deck of the unit itself. It takes a bit of deck space away, and we thought long and hard about that, but once we made the decision, we have not found it to be a problem. Also nice for raising the dinghy aboard on a harness with the halyard too. I hope the pic turned out, found it going through some old pics, seemed to give most of the detail. If you want real specs, let me know, we can get as detailed as you need. Hope this helps.

Thanks and by the looks of it you did not install a battery forward. Just long (big) wires. Do u know the model #?

I misspoke. The windlass is a Lofrans Tigres. LW400an/1200. Power rating is 1540 lbs. Retrieval speed/minute no load 112 ft/min, at working load 62 ft/min. Weight of unit is 51 lbs, voltage 12 VDC, motor wattage 1200 watt. We also ordered the watertight windlass control box, SPA 10700 and the standard chain wheel for 5/16" high test chain. Also the windlass switchgear kit which is the control box and foot switches. We dealt with IMTRA marine products through Manitowoc Marina in Wisconsin. It came with great detailed specs and wiring diagrams. More info at www.imtra.com. Windlass itself listed for $2600, but we purchased for $1680 plus $60 shipping. And YES the wires were huge. About as big around each as my thumbs, plus. I don't have the exact gauge written down, but we went oversize. We have a 420 amp house bank and when the engine is running, no noticeable drawdown for the brief time the windlass is operational. I still have all the paperwork and specs from 2004 if you need further.

Thanks for all the help. One more question.... Do you notice any deck flex when it loads up?

Not at all. We also used the cleat as the Sampson post for some pretty rough, multi-day anchorage situations while in the Caribbean, albeit with great ground tackle and a terrific snubber. To this day, in steep Lake MI waves we still have no creaks or evidence of flexing in this boat. I must say though, we weren't sorry to leave the salt water behind and reclaim our everlastingly shiny stainless!
