Windlass for Cat 30
Frederik,The Simpson Lawrence Sea Tiger is a very good manual windlass. There is enough space to mount the windlass ahead of the anchor locker, so that the chain falls into the deepest part of the locker as it tails off the gypsy (very important so you avoid chain castles). The Sea Tiger has a pretty good power ratio, and a long handle that allows for one to stand on deck and operated the windlass ( a fore and aft rocking motion with the handle). Which ever type of windlass you choose, make sure you install adequate backing material inorder to distribute the loads imposed by the windlass. If you want to go with an electric (I did), Gerry Douglas at Catalina Yachts installed a Maxwell vertical windlass on his boat a few years back. The installation was featured in 'Sail' magazine that year. You might write Gerry and see if he has a reprint he'd send your way. A little extra work to install, but if you anchor alot or in deeper water, well worth the effort.Best wishes,James M.S/V TesoriDana Point, California
