will this work on a 260?

Not sure if I am understanding the Honda 9.9 issue. I have a 2010 Honda 9.9 that has a remote start, Fwd/Rev lever and throttle on the pedestal, and I have wheel steering. My connector that runs between the motor and the rudder, has a quick connect which I disconnect when sailing. The key starter, what I'm calling a remote start, is mounted at the base of the captains seat. So I do everything from the captains seat until its time to sail. Then I spin around in my seat and disconnect the steering and raise the motor.

I don't have any pictures handy but I have attached one that somewhat shows my set up.

shanker;

I could not tell if your motor came with a tiller or not. They sold that motor with a tiller and optional remote with remote box. What some did was to remove the box and used the cables thus in essence throwing out that expensive remote box for the sake of a Honda. Most would prefer not to have that loss. Otherwise, what you think is a 2010 motor could actually be an earlier model. I would suggest following up with Honda providing the model and serial number to see if indeed this is a 2010 model.

av8erdunn, I've heard anecdotally ordering the remote parts separately can be done but I can't verify that. I also remember that Honda won't admit to that option. If you try that, please document the process and post. BrianW

I ended up finding the kit to convert the engine. Google the following...Honda 06170-ZV4-912 Remote Control Kit.

It will be here next week sometime. Now I need to buy my cables and edson controls. Only problem I have now is the edson controls attach to the top of the pedestal and I have a table on top of mine. May have to do away with the table :(

Av8erdunn, I don't have wheel steering on my H26, but if you could do us all a favor... after you install the Honda remote kit, could you let us know if the remote cables could be installed in another cockpit location for us tiller-steered boats with similar Honda outboards? Thanks, BrianW

Av8erdunn,
Great job on finding the kit. Please keep us posted on your conversion. I have looked at the remote version of the Honda 9.9 hp (BF9.9D) at a dealer and compared. Got even the description for attaching the cables. The difference between both engines (beside tiller or not) is the extra mechanic on the remote version, connecting to the internal gas and gear levers ( where the tiller version directly connects to).

So I knew it should be possible to add those parts, it was just too much work for me to find out every part needed. This mechanic connects into the gas and gear levers (port side) and provides the cable hook ups on the starboard side of the engine.

It is understandable that Honda dealers are not really interested in converting a tiller engine to remote; lots of work, hard to sell and dealing with second source cable controls. There may also be a liability issue; the kill switch is also on Honda's remote control unit, but stays on the tiller version. I can live with that, the red kill switch line is easily to reach.

My throttle was not mounted on the Edison pedestal. Instead, it was mounted on the starboard side of the seat.

You can see the throttle beside the cushion, just ahead of the motor. Yes, I still have the table!

I told av8erdunn to remove the forward cup holders from the cover pedestal plate and install the Edson controls that go on the side of the pedestal. By removing that part of the cover plate will allow full throw of the Edson controls as I use to on many of the boats I sold with pedestal wheel steering. I found that the other control previously mounted on top of that cover plate presented a lot of issues in the pedestal over time plus should he ever sell the boat, many would look elsewhere with that style control.

I had a friend with an American 26' that had very bad access to the outboard controls. The American has a tiller on the rudder.

He installed PowerTiller controls and really loves them. http://powertiller.com

I took his boat out a couple of times. They worked "fair". It was still so much better than reaching way over to the motor while trying to enter a slip.

I have bought the dual edson controls and 11' 3000 series cables. They should be here for installation this weekend if the weather holds out.

I bought and installed this on my 2005 hunter 25'. Works great, but turning to starboard is slightly reduced as rudder now bears some of the weight of my Honda 15hp
