Not exactly. In my case, I went about it the wrong way. When I realized I needed sailing lessons, which was 5 minutes into my first sail, I took lessons. In fact, I took every class they offered. Unfortunately, I was only good at docking and backing the boat. I had little knowledge of how to sail the boat. I couldn't read the wind and had no idea how all the sail trim controls for the main and jib functioned -- actually, I don't think the instructor did either!!
I then decided to get into racing to learn how to sail. I contacted winning skippers in So Ca and we had nice conversations UNTIL they realized I was a newbie. That ended the conversation. I finally got on a boat comprised of a pickup crew. "A man doesn't know what he doesn't know" and I wasn't sail trim smart enough to realize that these guys didn't know anything about sail trim either. Sometimes we crossed the finish line after everyone had gone home and another time we sailed 10 miles on a 6 mile course!! Another time we almost sailed past Dana Point because they didn't believe me when I told them where it was and they almost convinced me I was wrong. How did I miss these clues?!?!
I put up with that nonsense for a while and then realized there had to be a better way becuase "racing itself won't make you a better sailor". If I had to do it over again I would have done it differently and I suggest a way to newbies who want to pop into racing to learn to sail.
If a newbie came to you with the above topic suggestion, what would you tell him/her?
