Will it fit?

Looking at buying a new 8hp longshaft 4 stroke Mercury outboard for my 97 H26. Does anyone have this motor on theirs? Does anyone know of any clearance issues with it. Any input would be helpful.

We have a 9.9 Honda longshaft, with a powerlift and it fits fine. I have noticed while checking out other h26s that there seems to be different motor supports.

I am known for my knowledge of the 26, 260, 19, 240 and 23.5.

I would suggest the long shaft or 20 inch shaft if you are on an inland lake. If sailing in the oceanl, you may want to consider a 25 inch shaft in following seas. With the 25 inch long shaft, you have to be real careful to tilt it when pulling the boat out of the water on the trailer.

Get one that is electric start and for easy of attachement, use trolling motor plugs for easy disconnect.

TOhatsu also makes Nissan and Mercury small outboards which many do not know that little tidbit.

The original motor on my ‘98 H26 was an extra long shaft – 25” as Mr. Condon indicates. When I replaced the OB (now 8hp Yahama high thrust) it was the 20” long shaft. It’s OK. I have had a time or two in rough water when the prop surfaced. But, I should have been sailing. Right?

New OB is now in. It fits but does have limited turning radius. I will have to use the rudder for tighter turning ( entering slip ).

I exclusively use my H-26's rudder for steering while under way. I do, however, use both the rudder and outboard tiller for low speed tight steering while backing into my slip. BrianW

I bought the EZ Steer attachment between the rudder and motor. Turns them together. Makes the boat much more maneuverable.
