what were the reasons for the catalina 31 production? and the next question is how are they accepted, did it fill the gap that the 30 foot didn't and same for the 32 ? the 32 is a large boat for a 32 and wonder what owners think of the 31 ? thanks for any input mikej

room

the boat has plenty of beam and a big engine, to find this much room in similiar boat you would have to go up to the hunter 33 and the larger engine is an added option. ijust bought a310 from turner marine and although i have a few kinks to work out ican honestly say it is a great boat for the money plenty room for acouple with or without small kids. the boat motors and sails great

Different Target Market

Disclaimer - I've not sailed either boat, but I have been aboard both. From my perspective, the 320 followed the Catalina "lineage" and offered a boat that was set up to be good for a family - mom, dad & a couple of kids, or maybe another couple. The 310 came on the market a few years later, targeting the "no kids" bunch - either didn't have kids, or they were grown and gone. Kind of a different philosophy, where overnight guests on the boat were possible, but really didn't happen all that often. Utilize more space for the owner and don't try to squeeze two "real" sets of accomodations into a 30-ish size hull. Just my observations. (coming from an ex-C27 owner who coveted the 320, until I coveted the 310, until I bought the 350...) Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Tim's right

The whole concept was a reasonably smaller (than 32s and 34s and 36s) boat, but bigger than the 30 for just a couple. Should have this info on the Catalina yachts website and in advertisements. Stu

Catalina Website has the history, but in short

Catalina started to redesign the 30 using new hull & liner style construction used first in the 270 (it was to be the 30' Mark IV,). The design seemed so signficantly different that they called it the 310. They have said the 30 is so popular they will continue to make for those who want them. See entire story at: http://www.catalina30.com click on the C30 Yacht button in menu on leftside of page. Somewhere I have also read more complete story written by Butler, can't seem to locate right now.
