Guessing, I would suspect that if your engine is too big for your boat that it would be better for the engine to go ahead and increase the throttle even though you are throwing away money on extra fuel. All sailors are good at throwing away their mone anywayI find that there is a point where increasing rpm does not increase speed by the same percentage. When I get to that point in the curve I don't go beyond it.

Very interesting. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't apply to other small marine diesels. By "low power for long periods" I think they probably mean operations such as trolling while fishing. I believe, but would like more than anecdotal data, that operation in the 50-60% range only requires a period of higher power operation at similar intervals.From page 37 of the pdf operating manual for Yanmar 9hp engines:

I believe the chart that Roger presented. If you have the correct prop it will make a difference. We have had a couple of boats in our harbor that have had these issues. Once the switched props the boats did fine.
A question I've been meaning to ask since I was four years old:...but Every heavy equipment operator I have ever known will pull the throttle wide open, if the engine has been idling for an extended period before he puts the machine to work.
