I always wondered what that foot pump was for just below the drawers on the port side near the companionway ladder. My 1988 Catalina owners manual never explained the purpose of the pump, so naturally I thought it was a freshwater pump! Wrong!! It seems to pump out the water from the cooler, or so I think! I have yet to try it with a cooler full of water as melted ice had drained quite well without a pump. I could use some info on this if anyone knows for certain why it was set up that way. Thanks Bob

yes, it was set up that way, but instead of ice we freeze drinking water in plastic bottles and use it as it melts so we never use the pump anyway.

Flow Direction

Odds are the cooler bottom is at or below the water line. The pump is necessary to insure the ice box water goes out and not in.

Better than...

into your bildge...which is the way Catalina had the drain routed originally. We routed the ice box drain through a spare electrical water pump we had on board. This pump the ice box water into the galley sink, which of course, drains back into the sea, with no problems of water back-up... I guess your pump acheives the same thing, but don't know if I would trust a manual pump to act as a proper backflow preventer. Anything to have a dry bildge! GG "Emilie-Jolie" C30TRBS 1987

mortyd , Why not bring loose ice on board?

It goes in your drinks, keeps the Ice Box cool, helps keep your power draw & A/H down(if its got a refrigerator on board). Why not have ice on board?

Pumps Back Into the Sink!

Okay. I went ahead and added a gallon of water to the cooler to check out the pump action. As I was pumping the water, I could hear it and see it backing up into the galley sink with all the line crud along with it. As their is no check valve inline on the galley drain, the pump made it easier to lift the drainage from the cooler then force it out the thru-hull. Without a check valve then, it seems that pumping the cooler out is best done underway............ Lessons Learned Bob '88 Cat 30

yes, again, but if you wrap it in plastic it can still be used for cooking or drinking without any water accumulating in the ice box, capisci?
