Why a boat lists?

I've noticed my C30 listing to port in the slip...always. No matter if I take heavy gear off, move the batteries around, empty the cockpit locker. And I have not found any hidden cache of water onboard. I have looked around the interior of the boat to assume balance, but can't seem to find any reason. The docklines are slack and the mast is tuned and I'm not sitting on the bottom. Any ideas?

C-30 info.

A port list is common on Catalina 30s. I have my stbd. side loaded with tools, spares, water tank, etc., to compensate somewhat. For C-30 info join the email list on sailnet.net and the International Catalina 30 Association.

Ours does too

We also have a Catalina 30 (1988) with a slight port list. It seems to be fairly common. I just make sure to put as much weight as possible onto the Stbd side, make sure the stbd water tank is usually full, the holding tank is usually empty (it's on the port side) and just accept whatever port list remains. Catalina Port List(s)

Gary's right. Our C34s also have a port list. In addition to the ideas expressed, we just tie our boom off to starboard. Stu

C36s have port list also

With full fuel and holding tank I have a port list also. Even with full water tanks it still lists to port. It evens out with lower fuel and empty holding tank. Interesting I observed port list on darn near all C34 and C 36 on my gangway.

1988 C30 port list

My C30 lists to port about 10 "I put 180amp hr battery in a coustom battery box under starboard Q bearth and now I list about 2" then I put a water flex tank on st side next to new battrey and glassed In two blocks to hook the tank to hold it up on the side then I spliced it in the vent line and put a fresh water supply line on it from the sink cold watersupply that way I could pump the water into the tank to level up the boat . plus I have 20 gls extra water and I can pump the water out the headwindow If I want to lighten things up ( My 2nd water tank was changed to gray water becouse Im in a lake ) I dont no if the list hirts anty thing but I wanted the battrey and extra water antyway. My '99 C36 has a Starboard list

and its more noticable when the holding tank is empty. I Thinks its my 2 4D batteries

lead shot

you can add ballast on starboard by putting bags of lead shot outboard of the tanks beneath the settee. you may want to double or tripple bag them to make sure the bags don't wear through. i actually used two lead pigs that were about 80 to 100 lbs each. i wrapped them in thick towels to make sure they did not chafe. you can get the lead shot at a gun / ammunition supply house. you will need to find a lead smelter for the pigs. measure first before you buy.

Fixed the list.

I rebuilt the battery box under the starboard seate and added four golf cart batteries. No more list.

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone for your "fixes" to what appears to be a design problem. (I never thought about the fuel tank adding to the problem - too obvious, I guess). I'll be experimenting with many of your ideas when Lake Michigan thaws and the season opens.
