I don't know what a pentatonic scale is but that was interesting.
In a quiet anchorage, after dinner, Miles Davis is always welcome. Peggy Lee too. Don't forget your Reggae for dancing.

For me it's a combo of many styles.

My Dad turned me on to [Tom] Waits at an early age. He'd say Waits never stepped foot on a sailboat, but he wrote a better song ('Shiver-me-timbers) about sailing than CSN or Taylor. As J Mitchell said, "[he] could drink a case of [them]".The nice thing about Amazon.com is that you can listen B4 you buy (because I know my taste is far from the norm). You might try his 1st album, 'Closing Time'. Also, Canadian rockers Big Sugar (like Stevie Ray or Hendrix) & The Tragically Hip. Others; Ani DeFranco (great new album, 'Red Letter Year', Who would ever sing about 'messin' w/ the atom'?), Blackie & The Roadie Kings' (BARK) album 'Frolic' and Kenny White's album 'A Key in 16 Bars'. Music w/ substance. Like a shot of whiskey, a lil rough goin' down, but U R (usually) the better for it.

Only one mention of Van Morrison? Has to be my all time favorite... No U2 fans either? Bad is the tune while getting ready to get underway (or Who Knows by Jimi Hendrix)... have to agree never cared for JB...
Mostly I"ll select a genre from my Ipod, with R & B being my current favorite (from Alicia Keys to Ray Charles and lots of others)
Easy listening is great during or after dinner... Reggae is great while sailing...

A few more (in no particular order):
Peter White, Acoustic Alchemy, Oscar Peterson
Alanis Morissette, Edie Brickell
Common Sense, Sublime, Sugar Ray
Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline
Talking Heads, B-52's
Rolling Stones (not the Beatles)
and no list would be complete without Frank, Dean, Sammy, Tony, Ella, Louis (Armstrong and Prima!), Keely Smith...

and a few playlists that include some of my all time favorites... the ipod has really revolutionized how we enjoy our music, whatever it may be...

I'll have to check out some of the suggestions here... and my son is a constant source of music I haven't heard before (some of which I actually like)

Time to get the boat ready... going sailing today

We run the gamut in the IPOD. Buffett of course while underway. Country, light rock. Laying out in the cockpit at night under the stars with a bottle of wine there is nothing like Sinatra, Dean Martin and Michael Buble.

This has been an interesting thread and has provided some insight on fellow listmates.

As said by another, I enjoy a variety of music having been in my teen years in the 60's. These days I prefer harder music than most of my contemporaries (Van Halen, AC/DC, Def Leppard, etc.) but when I'm on the boat it's different. Jimmy Buffett is a staple as well as James Taylor and other music along those lines. What I listen to most aboard is music from the early 90's Irish movie The Commitments, after all, they're the Saviours of Soul!
Love the Commitments!! Repeat after me "I'm black and I'm proud"

Never could get into Buffet. I like alot of different music. From blues to rock. Like current stuff too. Never cared for rap though.

I must be the only sailor that dislikes Buffett. James Taylor too. I'd rather clean the head after a week of beans than...
Nope, can't stand Buffett either. To whimsical and I really don't want to hear sailing songs. I enjoy sailing but not music associated with it.
