LUZ.... hate to keep harping on Brubeck... but it's so neat to hear someone discover something I've loved for so long.... This is MY favorite Brubeck album.. It is BRILLIANT!

At the risk of overkill on the music thread, but loving every word of it ...Thank you so much for educating and sharing.. I listened to all of the clips from this album and then followed links for a while... and found that I really llike a specific kind of jazz so far... I like it when it flows and seems more bluesy and moody but not when it bounces all over the place. For instance, of all of these, I really like:

Dave Brubeck: Stardust, Fujiyama, Calcutta Blues, Brandenburg Gate

Best of Paul Desmond: Song to a Seagull, Skylark:
Chet Baker/ Desmond: Concierto de Aranjuez(esp. liked this), You Can't go Home Again

I think I am pretty much a purist in a weird way.. I just want to feel it. So often I find myself moved to tears by a guitar or a saxaphone or a trumpet that is crying........ Chris Botti's trumpet does that, Mark Knoffler, Nels Cline, Carlos Santana do that with guitar, or some voices... Pavarotti, Callas,... or Helene Fischer doing Ave Maria.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djmvux5Toao&feature=related
or Andre Rieu and Mirusia Louwerse ... pay attention to the audience http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkY9HtwXNU8

Imagine sailing to that........... for me that's about as good as it gets.

While we start every sailing season with JB(more like a tratition), Like ARKNOAH earlier, I often listen to Jazz with Boney James and Richard Eliot at the top of the list because that's what I try to sound like when I'm holding a sax. I'm really a trumpet player though, so Fred Hubbard, Cris Bottey, and Miles are in the mix as well. Then there's anything with a decent B-3 like Booker T or Jim McGriff....

Old Blues

While I do like JB, Eric Clapton, & Willie Nelson, not necessarily in that order, my favorites have to be the old time blues guys. Josh White, Charlie Parker, etall. For me that is real kick back and enjoy music.

I've been drumming for almost 40 years, so my musical tastes have grown quite diverse over the years. I currently play drums in both a Brazilian jazz trio and an instrumental surf rock group. In the past I've played in rock bands, blues bands, swing bands, rockabilly, punk, country (classic honky tonk only - the new Nashville is too fake.) I also freelance in just about any style you can think of.

I've spent probably the same amount of my life playing and working with boats, but I never really got into "sailing music" as a genre. Jimmy Buffet may be a brilliant songwriter, but I can't get past the music. Bores me to tears.

And for the record, on my boat, any instrument or device reproducing the Grateful Dead's music in any form goes over the side. Musicians included.

If I'm listening onboard while sailing, I'd probably choose something like Brubeck, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell, Vusi Mahlasela,.... Unless I'm screaming along, then I might put on some Jimmy McGriff, Danny Gatton, Dick Dale, or Iggy Pop. For cocktail time, Conjunto Bernal, Dirty Dozen Brass, Os Mutantes, or Sol Hoopii might be a good start, followed with some Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, James Brown, or Robert Randolph, and maybe wind up the party w/ Tom Waits.

Unless I'm solo, my kids, 12 &16 usually get to pick what is playing. One rule is it can't be what I call "itchy-scratchy". They play this video game - Guitar Hero at home and have a new appreciation for classic rock. About a year ago, my youngest was flipping through radio channels and stopped on one saying " oh, that's Sunshine of Your Love. That's a good one." That works for me.

My brother in law who is in his late 40's, would love to listen to KC and the Sunshine Band when boating, really loud. Just when I thought I was getting old enough to forget the lyrics to those damned songs, he had to refresh me for another 25 years. He's a power boat guy, what do you expect?

Zee, nice to see you on the forums. How are you doing in MX? Is your body doing better in the climate? Boat holding up OK? Are you still in the anchorage? How about an update (start a new thread if you like).

Aside from Buffet, I've recently started listening to a couple of Kenny Chesney's 'tropical' albums on the boat. Be As You Are was the first one, Lucky Old Sun is better I think and has a Buffet connection because he covers one of Mac McAnally's old songs. A lot of songs about boats and just wanting a simpler lifestyle. I'm not a country fan, but this aligns a lot more with JB than country.

C'mon Zee-tell us what you really think! Actually I am pleased to hear that I am not the only sailor who doesn't love Buffet. I thought there was something wrong with me now I know there is not.

Add me to "not a fan" club, I am bored silly by Buffet........but I sure know alot who listen continuously...... ugh

Recently discovered Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi ...saw them last month.. amazing guitar and her voice is ridiculously nice (Bonnie Rhait like) which made us pull out Greg Allman "Laid Back" and The Allman Brothers "Eat a Peach" .. (Trucks same style) and that was wonderful to listen to on the boat with a glass of wine.

Thanks to this thread, I've added several of these artists/songs to my "boat music" playlist - we like to "shuffle" through lots of different genres. Here are a few of our faves that I have not seen above - worth a listen:

artist. song

pink martini. andalucia
angelique kidju. tumba
astrud gilberto (getz/gilberto). girl from ipanema
s-tone inc. bahia bon amour
havana trio. malecon
rodrigo y gabriela. juan loco. (these guys also do the best stairway to heaven I've ever heard!)

Also, I don't think anyone's mentioned bobby mcferrin, three dog night, harry belafonte, the drifters....

YEP!!!! and their show at Humphrey's was the most pleasant surprise.... I knew they were good but their band is so talented and I love the vib between them all. Tedeschi and Trucks are so supportive of each other and when Derek smiles his little shy approving smile, it's a knockout. See more about them https://www.tedeschitrucksband.com/video/dereks-guitar-playing and sit back......relax!

Bobby McFerrin's a genius. I'd love to catch one of his shows, but if he started singing "Don't Worry, Be Happy" I'd have a powerful urge to jump on stage and strangle him to death while singing along.

Yeah, I've got strong feelings about music some times.
