Most common slip size

I have found that there is always a wait list for slips above 30' yet 30' & under seem to be readily available. I figure anything up to 32-33' with long overhangs would be permitted in a 30'slip. As long as I can sail it single handed or with my wife & it fits a 30' slip it is plenty big enough.

sorry Brian... but the question has seemed to elicit a lot of responses from readers defending their own boat size. I noticed that there are 5 Catalina 50 owners in the cat owners register here... so anyone under 50 feet need not respond.

I have a 37' with a 12' 10" beam that I have kept in a 35' slip for 12 years. I have had 5 slip mates that have always been less than 35' with only one that has been tight.

The size of the boats in our marina is

limited by their mast height and the Amtrak bridge. Over 53 feet and you bump. South of the bridge they have some bigger boats but no small ships.

So, a guy….

….and his family show up here last season with something sloop rigged and over 50 feet. I met him on the dock when I wandered over to check it out.I says to him, “Hot muther of mud! I second that Ted

We love our Pearson 323 but it probably has less room than your Beneteau 323. and it's a lot older. We have been looking at the Catalina 34. Bigger is better in some aspects but for most things bigger equals more expense. If I had a larger boat I'd have to have a larger anchor and that would require a windless. All marinas seem to charge by the foot. Last time at Key West it was $5/foot/night that adds up fast. we'd like a larger boat but don't want the boat to become such an expense that we reguard it as a financial burden.

I'm sorry, did I mis read your question? You ask: who on this forum has the biggest boat.... Boat sizes please?....Is there controversy here that I'm not seeing? What argument between a 65 footer and your 27 footer are you trying to exploit. I mean... one's 65 ft and the other's 27. I'm just suggesting you be more specific with the direction you want your thread to take. Stay cool, I love my 27 footer, too... but I'd get a bigger boat if I could.

I can claim complete satisfaction with the size of my C350. It's the perfect foundation to build a cruiseing boat on IMHO. I was also completely satisfied with the 15 year old Hunter 30. It was my wife who wanted a bigger one, I told her "Honey, it's not how big it is it's how you use it, but apparently she had heard that somewhere before. We had to get the big new shiny boat. I admit I rolled over pretty easy for that one but hey next time I've got my eye on a hot little washer/dryer combo I'm just gonna put it on plastic without even asking.

I like synchornicity response

Modest living has always been my mantra. I wanted to retire early with security. I am 57, retired, and own my 34 outright. My wife is 53 and does not work, either. I like this life style. I spent last summer cruising Canada in the Great Lakes. This summer I will cruise Lake Ontario and we will see what next summer brings. I would like to get to Bermuda. We live very modestly, but coformtably, and have the time to enjoy a life working people cannot.

How Well you Use it???

Well used equally well most would prefer bigger. Even if your wife is perfectly happy with how you use what you have I doubt that she would argue if it was bigger. It does seem silly to daysail with an ocean cruiser...but if you use the boat as lakefront (ocean front) porperty and a toy then it makes more sense. For us it mostly boils down to money. If money wasn't the major factor we'd own something close to 40' and much newer. My dream boat is a Pacific Seacraft 37 argueably the perfect couples boat for couples that want to sail anywhere. We could buy one but it would put a very serious strain on our budget. With our Pearson 323 old and paid for our budget is happy...well until the old Volvo MD11C dies. My wife has no desire to cross oceans and wants to keep one foot firmly on the shore so the P323 works for her. Realistically I'll probably never get to cruise any farther than the Bahamas and up to Chesapeak bay. My dream of following the trades across the Pacific will most likely remain a dream....bummer. But coastal cruising around the east coast isn't bad. I am thankful for the few days that I spend at sea or even in the lake.

Ross, you bring up a great subject

when you mentioned "satisfied". Never mind the word "completely". WOW is that ever loaded. I was just having this discussion the other day. Are "we" as Americans ever really truly satisfied with anything? When is enough, enough? I, myself, have very few wants. I really feel for those who are driven by forces to obtain their level of satisfaction, so they can be truly satisfied. It must be like living in HE_L not to be satisfied. Do most of us just settle for what we have and be happy we are there to have it? I think so. I feel it's all "in what comfort zone do you live in" type of thing. Do we "settle" for what we have .Or do we "strive" for more? Sometimes risking our physical health to achieve satisfaction. Just a spin on satisfaction. I do agree with synchronicity though. Keep it up, Ctskip

Wealth = what you need / what you have

What you (feel you) need devided by what you have equals your wealth. My dad for example was extremely weathy even though he had little access to money or luxury goods. He had a farm and a boat (16 ft Mirrocraft w/ 10 hp). He had a wide circle of friends, activities he enjoyed and work he was proud of and good at. After I moved away from home I would call and ask if he had been doing much fishing as a way of inquiring about his health. The stock answer was always "Not much, just once a day or so. I've got a lot of card games that they expect me to show up for and there is always someone in town who needs some help with something."I have had the priviledge of building some amazing luxury homes for a variety of interesting people. A few of those people were extremely needy and no amount of resources was going to change that. That type tends to not be very happy from what I can see.
