Obviously not the biggest. I am not interested in any bigger and, when I sold my 32 for this boat, quality, not size was the issue. I think there are plenty of advantages to mid 30 boats that, at least for me, outwiegh the advantages of larger boats.

They're getting insanely big out there

Pick up a copy of a sailing magazine these days and leaf through some of the new-boat ads--they're climbing into the 70-foot range for some commercial models. I would be very surprised not to see a reply from someone over 60'. And of course the world's largest sailing yacht which was commissioned last year is over 100'.

Small but suits me!

30 foot Pearson here (1975 model). Not anywere near as big as most folks but according to my Garmin, i have put 610 nautical miles on here since January. Most of them sailed by myself on weekends!

430

I have the 43' hunter 430 but I know from others on here that I have exchanged ideas with there are bigger, some 450, 460 for example. I find the 430 very easy to single hand and still very comfortable below. I am over 6'2" and the ability to stretch out in the salon and the aft berth that is king size at the shoulders makes it much easier to spend significant time onboard.

have a 37'

Mine is an Irwin and is the largest in the marina, but...a few things of note. In light winds, it goes too slow, and we have a lot of light winds...which enables my friends on their 27,28, 30 and 32'ers to point and laugh... I bought it cause it was cheap...or so I thought...if people only knew what a heap it is, they'd be happy with their boats. I can go out and have a good sail in big waves that the others can't or won't. Lastly. last year we sailed into a small harbor. The first boat was a 30' Scampi. The next a 32' Pearson Vanguard (long...narrow), then me. I stood out like a sore thumb! But it gave a real perspective on the size differences. And I sail it alone most of the time....it's cutter rigged so it's easy.

Mine is Big Enough

Since I am new at this size thing, we have a Catalina 25. I am, however, looking, and looking, and looking for a C28, newer 270, or at the biggest a 30. My reasons are pretty simple. It's just the Admiral, the dog, and me and we are in our second year of sailing. Not that we haven't sailed before, but this is our first boat. We are in our learning curve phase after taking the ASA basic keelboat course. Even though I want a bigger boat, I am very comfortable with the 25, and only want the headroom that a bigger boat will provide. I am tired of stooping. And finally, since we are lake sailors at present, the bigger the boat, the smaller the lake seems. At least to me.

Size does matter

A friend of mine once told me "the length of the boat is directly proportional to the amount of time spent at the dock" . In other words the easier a boat is to use, the more it will be sailed. Most of the guys with the big boats must have crew, which sometimes is hard to come by. If you can single hand , then you can sail whenever you get a chance. Just my thoughts.

I have been on that...

Hunter 54 that Jim Seamans mentioned below. Pierre, and his boat, are a "trip." PS: the wheel on the that boat is taller than I am. The winches are the size of small beer kegs... hmmm, knowing Pierre, perhaps that is just what they are...? Does he still run around dazzling the ladies in that teeny, weeny blue bikini??
