Do you have a dripless shaft seal?

We had one that made noise when it needed to be burped! Air seemed to enter during motoring with a following sea. That was one of the old style seals that did not have the tube going up to allow the air to escape.

I pressed back on the graphite and bellows to let a splash of water in and that ended the noise. That area of the seal was hot due to lack of cooling water. Of course I did that with the engine in neutral and the boat at a standstill.

^ If it's not the dog, maybe your wife in hungry?

Seriously I'd check the shaft/packing/dripless/log/cutlass. If not the packing/dripless, prob have to haul the boat. I hate those noises, always hard to trace/pinpoint.

Good luck. Bob

Sorry to hear about your issue. Hope you can find the issue. The internet is not an appropriate place to diagnose sounds, smells, tastes, or electrical issues with pictures but no wiring diagrams.

The best advice is to be methodical. Take each of your "possibilities" one at a time. Really, only ONE at a time.

Someone gave me good advice a long time ago: when you have issues for changing filters (for example), try only one fix at a time, 'cuz if something works or doesn't, you simply won't know which one it was (or wasn't).

Good luck.

I took it that Stu was saying that a lot of the advice that comes back to vague "noise or bump, bump, etc" type questions are basically little more than a guess.
Secondly, if you change more that one item at a time you won't know what was the correct problem.
Without qualified expertice you can spend a great deal of money on equipment you didn't need.

If you want to catch a rabbit you hide in the bushes and make a noise like a carrot. What? it is a long thin orange sound.! ;)

I was going to say it sounds like a teenage son still living in the basement with a gland problem.

Does it also happen when not in gear? If so, it could be your fresh water pump bearing, assuming your engine is fresh water cooled.

No only in gear and at hi revs
Tie up nice and tight, put it in gear, put it at high revs, and head below to see if it's forward or aft of the coupling.

You need to narrow it down, and that's not going to happen while the narrower is standing at the helm.
