loud power dependent idiots

Without a doubt my number 1 pet peeve is generators at an anchorage. Either anchor away from everyone else or stay at a dock where you belong! If you're that dependent on tv, ac and etc...you need to be land bound. The rest of us are at an anchorage for the peace, quiet and solitude. If you can't respect that--GO AWAY! This past May, we were out cruising and spent our last night out at Ussepa Anchorage. It was late in the evening (9:30pm) and my husband and I were enjoying a nightcap when this rude trawler plowed thru the anchorage and don't you know it, "sets anchor" almost on top of us and FIRES UP THE GENERATOR! After a month out, I was tired of my peaceful nights being ruined by generators (and yes perhaps the alcohol added to the bravery), but I asked the guy if he planned to run that thing all night. He told us to shut up or leave. Well last night out, just ignore and keep peace. Sitting there discussing how rude he was, we noticed he's dragging anchor!! Right for us!! Finally got his attention, he'd stopped dragging anchor (cause he'd caught on our oversized anchor set up) and accused us of drifting (that would have been upcurrent for us to do that). Long story short, he ended up finally moving but not far enough away for us to have a peaceful night. I think we should lobby for NO GENERATORS in anchorages!!! Maybe if we all band together at an anchorage and tell them to turn it off or leave and everyone around makes them uncomfortable they'll get the hint. Don't let them take the last little bit of peace and quiet from us. They are still a MINORITY. If they need that much power, STAY HOME! Off my soap box now!!

Outboards

Well, I am very hard of hearing but some noises get through. Worst is the Cruise 'n' Carry air cooled outboard. And I am the worst offender since I believe I have the only one still in existence. After that, generators that run all night. We seldom see jet skies in our anchorages and halyard slap is not a problem. I hear only ours and promptly fix it. My wife is constantly telling me to pipe down since sound carries across the water and my talking interferes with her evesdropping.

Jet Ski's MUST GO - It's now our LAW

The Mississippi Gulf Coast seem to have the most Jet Ski's. Our problem is not only the noise but the wake they leave. Seems most motor boats

What I hate the most

Generators on powerboats! Escpecially when they anchor upwind of me and I have to smell the diesel exhaust for hours! If you're feeling like a commando, a potato shoved into the exhaust will kill them pretty quick.

Absolutely irritating

By far, the MOST irritating noise is the sound of a young couple (anchored too close to begin with) making love while your wife has a headache! Under those conditions, it should be federally mandated that earplugs be deployed for self preservation. Oh, and who forgot to bring the Excedrin?

Correcting halyard slap

I agree with Gary, I have boarded many vessels to correct a problem in a positive way. Boarding to malicously damage equipment is just the attitude that I am trying to avoid when sailing. I have found most of the sailing community to be courteous

Correcting halyard slap 2

One advantage of our 'older' Hunters is having a real toe rail. It is simple to lead your halyards to the toe rail after anchoring or docking. I do not understand why more people cannot fathom this simple concept. Somewhat more difficult for the newer vessels with glass rails but not impossible to come up with a solution. I must respond

I must say, everyone is complaining about the halyard slap... well when I am aboard Freebird.. I sleep sound except when awaken by a storm, rocking rolling, wind howling, and of coarse the halyards slapping from nearby boats. (note, mine don't slap) But to me, its the sounds of boats.. I love them all and I fall back asleep like a baby in the cradle. Guess maybe the power generators don't work for me, or someone else's music selection... but other than that... let the halyards slap!

And now I must...

If the sound of slapping halyards is music to YOUR ears, that's fine--as long as you enjoy it in an anchorage well away from anyone else who can hear it. But if you insist upon subjecting others the "music" YOU enjoy, you have no right to complain about boom boxes, generators or anything else that may be music to someone else's ears.

Powerboats passing too close at anchorages

My wife and I have our favorite anchorage off Key West. Usually there are a few other boats there also. Nice and quiet and far enough out for no bugs. Powerboats, however, come through the area and often pass within thirty or forty yards of us. Miles and miles of open sea and they feel compelled to make sure our boat rocks back and forth like a cork, throwing us and the contents of our boat around. When you give them dirty looks or yell at them, they look at you like, "what?"
