Where's the oil?

yes there is a possibility that the oil dipstick reading was at max. 3/4 of a qt. low...but even still that means approx. 1 1/4 qts of oil are left in the pan after every oil change...after 35 yrs?...also someone here did mention that the engine angle may render the mnfrs. 5 qt. dipstick full line inaccurate.

What does it mean when the oil looks cloudy colored on dipstick readings?

thanks for all of your great comments

I just assume they Yanmar has there reasons for doing the dipstick thing
and not a bottom drain plug and yes always still has a little old oil but with a good 12 volt extractor none impeller and just get as much old oil out with out rushing and I do other things while letting the pump do it's thing pushing in and out the plastic tube making sure I get as much as possible out and add new oil and I change my oil often and so far so good not needing to ever adding oil while using for hours of motoring and fresh oil does the job very well.
I don't like adding things that may be more of a problem like a bottom drain,on my old sailboat I added a oil pressure gauge and after about 2 years the fitting cracked letting the oil empty out while motoring a dangerous inlet up north and was lucky no damage and used the jib to get safe before getting towed,

The quart in the filter is when you accidentally spill it while removing.
... as I proved yesterday cleaning up the mess after dropping the filter. It missed the pad, missed the bag, but rolled against the water heater so I only had to reach between the engine, battery, and hot water tank. I changed it with a cold engine having leaned against the hot HX on several previous oil changes.

Does this not beg the question; Why was the dip stick not located at the rear of the engine?
Since most engines are marinized tractor engines they are designed to be mounted horizontal and not on an angle like they are in most sailboats to align to the shaft exiting the boat. When you consider they sell millions of tractors with engines every year and only thousands of sailboats every year it is a factor of scale.

In the manual for my 3YM20, a chart has oil capacity for a couple engine "rake angles". So, they have taken that into consideration.

Our 1986 O'day 272 does have a 1 ft. hose that flows from the oil pan at the front of the engine compartment access door..it has a brass nipple that we mated to a small hand pump w/ another nipple that is a mate for the oil pan hose....it really makes it simple to change the oil and you would be surprised how clean the oil on the dipstick first appears after draining the pan of all
old oil....Just need a cool day to do this ....not a 100 degree day which I normally choose.
