We have a hunter 1984 25.5 it has nver had bottompaint as it was a fresh water boat. How do I find the water line? Do I paint to the boot stripe. I am going to apply a barrier coat and ablative anti- fouling paint. Thank You

Barrier coat

The waterline on our 25.5 is a couple of inches below the boot stripe. I think it looks a little better to have a little gap between the boot stripe and start of the bottom paint.

Add some dimension

I think it is better looking if you add some visual dimension to the waterline by leaving some space between the bottom paint and the bootstripe. See photos on the attached link. Some look better than others, some look dull, some look fast! <G> See link Jim

below boot stripe

Kill two birds w/ 1 stone: Use the boot stripe to line up your masking tape, then your bottom paint will be the width of the tape below the stripe.

The transom

How about a line on th transom. Jim, your link was a grat help, but I don't know what to do at th transom? Also, Scott I looked for your boat at 2 Brownell's. Which yard is it at?

Brownell's

It's at the Mattapoisett yard that is right near exit 19. Beside's my 25.5 there is another that has a black bottom.

About the Transom Gib.............Jim

Gib, most sailboats have an overhang aft, but if not just continue the line around the transom as it flows parallel to the waterline , perhaps this image will help. In the case of an overhang, you would continue the line aft, down and under the hull and there would be no line on the actual transom. See attached image..........Jim

Ablative?

Gib, if you plan to bottom paint, you may want to think about a hard Trinidad finish, instead of ablative. In your area a Trinidad paint will last you many, many years. Ablative will build up, flake off in spots, and create an annual paint job/sanding task for you. If you use hard Trinidad paint, you'll only need to polish (light sand) the bottom to restore the antifouling properties (remove oxidation) each spring, and not have the ablative build up. If you use Trinidad hard paint, you likely wouldn't have to repaint for 6 years, just polish every spring and splash! Just a thought, look into Trinidad SR Gib.
