I installed mine in the cabin top vent hatch behind the mast. It was an easy installation to make as the plastic hatch is easy to cut, is centrally located, and does not leak. And any leaking that may occur would not seep into the wood deck material. The hatch will still open with the vent in place. Check the size; Nicro offers a couple of them.
Last season I replaced my solar vent which was installed in the forward hatch of my 1983 Catalina 30. It was the older type without the battery and was not repairable. The new one works great and I think the forward hatch is the best spot.
