Where To Install AC System

Sure its winter, but right now I am planning ahead to install a reverse cycle AC system in my 30 Catalina this spring. First step is of course, opinions, suggestions, experinces, etc. I have an 88 model that does not have the cabinet under the navigation table where I have seen several AC installations on other models. That is the perfect location. This leaves the hanging locker, under the companionway stairs or under the quarter berth. My settee contains the water tank and batteries and the V-berth additional water tankage. Limited areas indeed; however, I do have the "U" shaped dinnette that came with the seating compartment that is attached to the bulkhead, but blocks access to the forward part of the bildge. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks Bob Cat 30

Split unit A/C

Several years ago I installed myself an Artic Air reverse cycle A/C unit. The compressor fits in the lazerette, The air handler is forward of the water tank under the v berth and the water pump fits between the macerater pump and the pressue water pump. This requires copper tubing to run from the stern to the space under the v berth along the port side. I had a marine A/C guy solder the connections as the solder requirs 1800 degree temp and a special solder which I did not feel I should work with. This was the only thing I didn't do myself. The tubing was insulated with foam water pipe insulation from Home Depot to keep condensation under control. Condensate from the evaporator was run to the shower drain. This was a 16,000 BTU unit and keeps the boat cool in 95 degree Gulf Coast weather(uncomfortably cold at night without a blanket) and warm in 35 degree weather which we are experiencing today.I would do it this way again.

Thanks Harry

Appreciate the feedback Harry. I am going to hang onto your install details and see what kind of room and I have for the same locations. It sounds like the best use of space since the areas you are talking about are not necessarily set aside for fresh folded clothing! Thanks Bob

...under forward seat of settee

Hi. My 89 C30 has all of the AC components under the forward bech of the u-shaped settee. It seems to work fine and I have good access to all components. There is ducting for an outlet in the v- berth and the galley. Good Luck!. Don

Under the U dinette

A dockmate has his under the forward setee of the U dinentte, it works great. When I looked at it I thought the only thing missing from Catalina was a little sign that said "install AC here". I, however had to give up the tank in the vberth in my 93 with standard interior. Still worth it, you will really enjoy the AC.
