I have a Hunter 34 and want to install a 16000 BTU Adler Barbour air conditioner. I am looking for advice as to best location, plumbing routes and ducts routes.

AC Installation

I installed a 16K unit below the chart table. Had a custom teak cabinet built for it. Routed one duct to the aft cabin (where we slept) and the second one into the sliding compartments behind the settee. We used the very first slider opening. This kept both duct runs/length short. The boat really chilled down, even on 95 degree days. We elected to not run a duct to the forward cabin (would lose too much storage space). The downside of this was the forward cabin was warm during the day, but OK at night.

Did you look at alternatives

thanks. Did you consider either next to the water heater or next to the port water tank

Use the size specs,

and make a cardboard mock up, try to place the box where you want your A/C unit to be, also be aware, ducts and supply hoses take lots of space too!

Air in aft cabin

we installed a Cruisair 12k BTU unit in the aft cabin suspended from the overhead in the port corner. This is not your every day installation, but we did not want to take up any room otherwise used. It takes little from the aft cabin. Ductwork runs forward and exhausts just above and below the chart table. We had planned on a second 5k unit for the forward cabin, but never got around to it as the 12k unit was adequate when assisted by the cabin fan. Because we would never use the engine and air at the same time, I used a 3-way valve on the engine water intake, put the sewater pump under the aft berth and dumped the sewater into the hose used by the port cockpit scupper. No new thruhulls. It works great, and the noise is away form the main and forward cabin.

Clyde, Thanks for the suggestions. Where does the condensate water go to? Do you have any pictures of the installation you could share?

How did you fit it in there

Tim, Which unit do you have. I would like to put my unit there but I don't see how to fit it in. Do you have any pictures. How did you run the ductwork. Did you have to relocate the water heater.

AC unit install

I have a 16,000 BTU unit installed under the port side of the V-berth. All air duck work is run along the port side storage areas behind the back of the seats. The duck air duck goes under the nav, through the small storage into the aft cabin storage and out the back of the aft cabin storage. This route allowed for air vents in every room of the boat.

John, I would like some more info

John, Thanks for the info. Did you run the primary duct thru the foward locker, into the vanity cabinet, then thru the storage area behind the sliding mirror, then into the storgage area with the sliding doors? How did you run the water supply. Where did you mount the strainer and pump. Did you use a condensator or did you run the condensate water into the bilge. I would like to see any pictures you may have. I can provide my e-mail address if that would help.

in front of the port water tank

I installed a 9600 btu mermaid infront of the port water tank, I was able to keep the water pump in place as well as fit in the circulater pump. I T'd off the vanity drain for the water supply and ran the discharge out a thruhull behind the vanity. As for the condensate, I installed a condensator and put a T inbetween the drip pan and teh check valve to allow for drainage into the shower sump once the air was turned off. I ran one 6" vent up behind the port settee and ran 3" high velocity ducting to the aft cabin another under the nav. station aimed at the galley, one up to the V berth and the final around to the starboard side of the main cabin. This system has worked beutifully for two seasons keeping 4 of us cool. oh, I forgot I had to raise the top of the settee 3/4 inch to allow for the plenum I made to handle the ductwork.

Gene, thanks for the info.

I thought about this installation scheme but I think I will have a tough time fitting my Mermaid 16000 btu unit in the space forward the water tank. I would like to get more info on the duct system. Do you have any pictures, you could post or e-mail to me.
