And there is one of us here in Rivière-du-Loup, Québec. Winter is almost here. My Vega has been on the ground since October 18th. :-(Stick around northern fellows, I\'ll be back with at least one question in winterizing. Jean-FrançoisDepuis de mon iPhoneLe 2014-11-14 à 13:47, Halvachs MPHALV@... re wintering, my preference is to leave Aisling afloat. Ashore seems to result in more damp and mould, presumably because of the more constant sea temperature. Additionally, there are problems ashore if the bow is lightly down - I've had the cabin filled with rainwater .. since resolved by removing the bilge drain plug on the rare occasions we overwinteri ashore.Probably not an option if your sailing area is fresh water.I'm aware that winter's arrived in Canada - despite being based in the UK I work for a Calgary based company, and am well aware that the first snows arrived more than a month ago!Alisdair

Hi all,Well I am in my shop, building new bulkheads...lol. I don't think I am ever going to see the water...My plan has been, start at the transom and fix, redo, finish every square inch until I am finished. WHAT WAS I THINKING? For the Love of God, no one has ever as much as tighten a nut on this boat!...lol. My wife just told me it is an old boat, what were you thinking? Women can be so cold, what about my feelings? Well if I live long enough to finish this little boat, it will be better then new, that is if I don't start upgrading what I have finished. I need my meds.

I remember Mr Deagle who ran a railway and built a lot of boats and
rebuilt many times that number In Deltaville Va. He used to say a
proffesional rebuilding a boat knows how much to tear out and
rebuild to have a successful product. The Amature wants to make and
old boat new. Some of my friends tease me by saying that every old
rotten boat calls out to me and I guess it is true. I am saying
wanting to rebuild or refinish every square inch is a perfect
example Of what Mr. Deagle claimed. I have come to believe that a
big part of the beauty of an old boat is the combination of the old
and the new. The creaking of an old boat is the worn looseness of
her Joinery work and the black streaks in her wood finished bright
so the age in her can be seen.
I am an old Machine shop owner and production worker. One of the
things I so much admire in the Albin Vega is the design work that
allowed her to be built not by highly skilled old world craftsmen
but with much less skilled factory workers and still manage to build
a very successful racing, cruising boat of extreme beauty and ease
of handling. One with a bare minimum of bright work to give beauty
with a minimum of maintenance and the same is true with her
interior. One of the things that I really like about her looks is
that she has no teak on her the is build with sapella or maybe
African Mahogany. With varnish on it the contrast between it and
the fiberglass is strikingly beautiful. At the same time unlike
teak that does not hold varnish well the wood is easy to keep. My
boat Sea Legs is kept in the first slip on the first pier in a
marina where everyone walks past her and they all say something
about her beauty and some ask how to you keep the varnish work so
beautiful. Sometimes my wife will say, "He works on it all the
time." A few have said, well I prefer to spend my time sailing. My
wife and I are likely to look at each other and smile. I varnish my
Mahogany once a year or maybe twice some years. Because I never have
to take the varnish off it takes a hour to go over it all with an
abrasive scrubby and another hour to varnish. Every three or four
years I roll and tip a coat of paint on her and from ten feet away
you can tell it from a $10,000 sprayed on coat of exotic two part
Urethane paint. If I scrape her against a dock a light sanding and a
quick coat of paint and looks like new. (KISS) She is beautiful and
she is old and I hope to keep her both. Doug
