OK. I know this sounds a little odd, to say the least but I have searched online for a couple of weeks now and can find no conclusive evidence to show where the halyards exit the mast on my recently purchased 1984 cat 27. The main halyard currently runs up the back of the mast and then over the top of the mast and back down to the winch on the side of the mast. The Genoa halyard was non existant at the time of purchase and the roller furling was hoisted on the spinnaker halyard and broke as soon as I un- furled the headsail and fell into the water. I am planning to use our companys bucket truck to rerun the lines however if I need to install exit sleeves I'd like to have these installed before organizing the truck on the wharf etc. Any photos or suggestions would be appreciated. I have found tons of great details for the mast head but nothing on the exit strategy!!!

The jib and main halyards run outside of the mast. They run through the masthead. The sheaves are for 1/8" cable, but they are wide enough to handle 5/16" or a thin 3/8" line. I used Kevlar that looks like 5/16". There are extra pins on the ends where you can attach extra blocks. I use the jib halyard as a topping lift since my roller furler doesn't require a halyard. I also have a winch on the mast for hoisting the main.
I've attache some detailed picts.

Great!! Those pics are worth a thousand words. Thanks very much. I looked up the Catalina manual online and it showed the halyards going down the inside of the mast but I had no visible exit sleeves in my mast!!

I plan on using a low stretch 5/16" line rather than wire. I'm still not sure how i'm going to run the two halyards with the single winch but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Thanks again for your reply

Re: where are the genoa and main halyards supposed to run!!?

The winch is dedicated to the main halyard which on my boat is an 1/8" cable. I tried to replace it with a 5/16" line but it does not fit on the winch. The ss cable works just fine. I bought some 5/16" Kevlar from Minneys Yacht Surplus. It is a light beige and goes well with the Catalina color combination. The stuff is low stretch, fire proof and uv resistant. It is also stronger than other lines. I think it was about 29 cents a foot when it first came in. He had some huge rolls of the stuff.
