Must be the same guy

Must be the same guy that came cruising into the no wake zone on the Sassafras River on autopilot. We were in my buddies bow rider doing apx 6 kts when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was a 50'er on plane and bearing down on us fast, maybe 15' away. My buddy broke right and we started screaming profanities and hitting the horn which finally got his attention. I watched him get out of his chair and take it off autopilot. He hadn't even been looking at where he was going. Yes he looked embarassed, no we didn't go talk to him but it was very tempting to do so. You just can't trust anyone.

Mike , you could have done the world a favor by

not waking him. In about 3 more minutes his boat would have been history.

Too crowded

Ross it was a hot summer Saturday and way too crowded on the river. Had we not raised his attention he most likely would have run someone over. At the speed he was running he would have most likely killed whoever he hit. It was darn near us. Mike

I hear you Mike. The Sassafras can be quite a zoo

sometimes.

In 1988 the Sassafras from Georgetown to Ordinary

Pt. was so frenetic, so crowded and with so much high speed traffic, the Md. DER put a SPEED LIMIT of 6 kts. for that entire 3 mile stretch. The reason was that there was sooooo many huge boat wakes that the shoreline was being battered and washed away; and, was done at the insistence of the property owners living along the River. It only lasted 1 season but it sure was NICE to have a sailboat on the Sassafras River that year. The wakes are sometimes so bad in the Sass that sometimes you wish that marine fuel was $50.00 per gallon.

RichH, I would love to see that section of the

Sassafras as a no wake zone. Some of those poorly trimmed power boats make a bigger wake at 6 knots than at top speed. I don't mind the bassboats sliding past at 60 as much as the trawlers at 10.

I would like to know where this quote comes from, Jim, "Vessels in a Regatta are always considered the stand on boat". I want to know if this is really a rule or an attitude.
