When not to use the boom vang?

I think people miss the importance of having the boom near the CL while going upwind. That can be construed as a definite tactical advantage, so keep yanking on them vangs folks. :)

I might also add that while "freeing up" the topping lift is absolutely something the gas vang will do, you don't want the vang taking the load on the boom while you are not sailing, and a free block isn't necessarily a free block, it's on the wrong side of the mast for anything else except maybe a flag halyard.

?? While that’s indeed important, the vang doesnt help achive that at all.

Not much at all. I do find that the little Garhauer gas unit does need a lot more attention than expected, in as much as it's always pushing, and in very light air, there are cases where vang on is a valid statement. Not to pull, per se, but to find a balance point where it's effect is nul.
