What's Your PFD policy?

Malcolm I was just provoking some thought

I agree with what you said. I was just taking Data from the USCG on deaths/drownings etc. Obviously Data is only as good as what was input. Bad Data in equals Bad Data out. I also believe that this is not a Black and White discussion. I also support those that want people on their boat to wear a PFD. I just don't want anyone mandating it or suggesting that anyone who doesn't wear a PFD ever second is a 'bozo' . With less than 25 total deaths (drowning and others) on sailboats in a year, I don't think its becoming a "epidemic" nor a societal burden. People that own and operate a Sailboat should understand that there are potential risks involved, as in Sky-Diving, Skiing, taking a shower or walking across the street. Its just that some activities are more prone to risks than others. If anything happens to me I will not blame anyone, nor should anyone of us. What's wrong with society today is that no one wants to take responsibility for themselves. If anything happens to them they want to blame the government or someone else. Our society is slowly creating a coddled populace that is losing the strength and fortitude that made this country and (other countries) great. "I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit." --- Dawna Markova

"...to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit." OK, that is just wierd. ;D And on my boat all the apples and oranges wear little auto-inflating FFDs!

I love that the admril has no idea what you're doing back there! Your New nick name should be Mr. Safety. (clearly other people were close so it's not really unsafe, just funny looking) nice shot.

Responsibility

It is heartwarming that so many have recognized the need for taking responsibility for one's own actions. I read in the sports pages today that the father of the St. Louis baseball team's pitcher who died last month after running into a truck on a free way is suing the restaurant that he was drinking at before the accident, as well as the truck company whose truck he hit which was stopped on the freeway helping another car who'd had an earlier accident. The pitcher was drunk (2X legal limit) and had grass in his car. But, of course, his papa doesn't think HE (the pitcher) had ANY responsibility for his own death. Oh, he wasn't wearing a seat belt, either! And that's progress? When we were in the BVIs a few years ago, we brought our own PFDs. After sailing here on San Francisco Bay for so long, I felt funny sailing without one on. On the last day of the trip, my son and I jumped in to see how they worked! Self inflater's, WOW, whoosh and popped us right back up. Nice to know how they work, too. It's a daily and sometimes hourly decision to use them. I am more comfortable with them on, single hand a lot and wear one all the time. With guests, they wear 'em because I give them to them, never had an argument, ever. It's just a good habit, but when it's hot, or I'm swimming -- that's a no brainer. Interesting thread.

;D One of my Favorite pictures

It was one of those days. It was about 4 hours into a 7 hour sail out to Plum Gut. Early August. 101 deg. 80% humidity, no wind (fiddled with trying to sail Assym Spinnaker for a while, it was useless.) Note how limp the American Flag it . Tried fishing for a while and that led to nothing also. I wanted to cool off and one thing led to another and led to a fun picture. Yeah the admiral had no clue LOL. Sitting on the bow reading a book. To this day she gives me a hard time about it. LOL . Of course I had a partner boat motoring along side (who of course took the picture) I am actually pretty cautious, especially in areas & situations I don't know. I'm just not anal all the time. When I do things or go places I try to study and know as much as I can about what I am going to encounter. If I can't think out all the "what ifs" of the situations I am in then I will tread carefully. The admirals kids actually think I'm a "hard a**" at times, but when I need everyone to listen up, pay attention and follow orders I don't mess around. Its funny when I go into the "Sand Hole" the whole crew knows to "Zip-It" until we are well inside in a Safe area. I don't go into things 'blindly' I study the risks involved. (FYI for those that don't know the Sand Hole is a well known gunkhole between Oyster Bay and Huntington, with very tricky inlet that shows 3 feet in some places and zig-zags back and forth. Click on the chart below for a Maptech online chart of the locations)

We wear our pfd's when one of us says I think it

is time for them. Yesterday we were sailing up on the river. Had the place to ourselves. Flukly winds, sometimes flat calm, sometimes 6-7 knots, no PFD's. Checked both to make sure the lights and whistles work, had them out where they could be thrown if one of us did something really stupid.

Under way, all wear PFDs!

It's simple, logical, and the only solution that really works. Descriptions of incidents show that disaster often strikes without warning. We carry both inflatables and comfortable jacket types to everyone has options. I have seen boaters drown for the simple lack of PDFs - in huge frustration because I just couldn't get to them in time. In addition, the skipper is always harnessed and tethered unless there is another helmsperson on board that is confident of the man overboard drill. David Lady Lillie
