I might have alot of time to post here. We haven't had a significant rain in Oklahoma City for a LONG time. Lake is down 8-9 feet. No one is sailing at this point...

Well, I painted the bottom yesterday. We had a window, one nice day in a stream of cold, rainy ones, and I happened to be off.

I had last week off and spent most of it scaping and sanding, and digging crap out of my eyes. Yes, I had goggles on. I even added foam as a gasket to seal better. Didn't work. Finally, I made a hood and duct taped it to the goggles. With the respirator, I looked like a denizen of Tatooine. But it worked.

So, long story short, bottom has Pettit Hydrocoat on it. It looks good. As soon as the weather breaks, I'll finish sanding the top and put Pettit EasyPoxy to it. Yeah, I know I'm going in reverse order, but I have to reassemble the trailer under the boat before it falls off, like it almost did in a vicious wind storm last Saturday. Once I get the project done, I'll post pics.

Our marina is opening up for boats the end of next week! Major projects done and just cosmetic stuff to do now. Hoping for some dry weather so I can get most everything done and get on the water soon!

It's not as bad as Mn up in our part of the country, but the weather keeps changing up and down and we dont know what to expect next - was real nice today but didnt' have a '36 hour day' today so it was gettin dark on my only day off by the time I finished the "can't avoid" chores. The last nice day was a couple weeks ago but buds from the tree over the boat's tarp were still fallin and hoped to prep the following week(rained every day instead) and setteld for spraying dandelions on what was left of the lawn from last year'd drought(don't think I killed any of 'em but I guess I mighta scared a few!). Outta town all this week and working both weekend days. Maybe I'll have her in her spot before they start draining the lake...

I gave up the trailering life and rented a slip at the marina. I'm used to motor boats on trailers, no big deal, sailboats is hard.

Took the little O'Day 22 out of storage to continue Re-WORK! Sanding /Scraping bottom and found that the swing keel retention plate bolt head broke/rusted off! Cleaning area and applied Liquid Wrench before attempting removal! Hope to grab the remaining nub with vice grip; otherwise drilling and easy out... Pray for luck - my skill is limited!

I've always just cruised the "new posts" on the site. A lot of bigger boat stuff interests me, I hope to one day have a bigger boat, and all the Trailer sailor stuff shows up there, so it's a great way to feed all of my dysfunction.

The weather is iffy in Texas and I am deep in repair and clean up. I have not sailed this h 23.5 for ten years and I am rusty as my boat is dirty. Any suggestions for inland sailing in Texas. Also need to spend time in Minnesota when winter relents any suggestion for easy sailing in Minnesota?

We've got over 13,000 lakes so take your pick... Actually Lake Pepin on the Mississippi is a great lake about 22 miles long and 2-3 miles wide. Several ramps and marinas on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides. Further north there's Lake Mille Lacs, Leech Lake, and way north Lake of the Woods. All of those are quite large. Of course Lake Superior will give you some experiences.

Closer to the cities there's White Bear Lake, Lake Minnetonka, Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriett..smaller lakes but lots of sailing there.

Where will you be based while in Mn?

Repaired swing keel support bolts on our 1979 - 22 O'Day. Now using simple green to remove bottom algae and crud (from previous owner) then will sand and apply new paint. Great fun! Next Job - to apply VHF cable and antenna to mast. Anticipating launch date - Mid May?

Thanks for your reply on Minnesota. We are familiar with Peppin and some of the other lakes in Minnesota. Redwing is great and we often go just for a day. Does anyone have experience with electric winches for launching and retrieving a sailboat (H 23.5)? Is it a good idea and does it make launching and retrieving easier? I am looking at the Powerwinch RC 30 as to handle a "bigger" boat? I am experimenting with a small winch to raise the mast on the H 23.5 and have a good little design using the anchor locker U bolt and two long turn buckles to steady the winch. Seems to be a good set up, but have not actually attempted to raise the mast. I plan to rig up some kind of sling.

Gotta hope the name "Leech lake" was chosen to keep the crowds away. I'd think twice;)

Good luck on the elec winch with your 23.5. It should work fine if your mast has the permanent mast struts or even baby stays. I've been using a similar system for years with no remorse(or back problems anymore). If you havn't seen it here's my setup. mike

New member here. I'm hoping to to get my (new to me) Hunter 23.5 out this weekend. I've been taking a Basic Keelboat course so I can charter larger boats or I would have had it out sooner. The wind has been blowing pretty strong here on the days I could go out. I'm hoping for calmer conditions for my first day out on the new boat.

Kevin,

Welcome to the family! I know what you mean. First days can be fun.

My first time out, first time ever, the wind was aound 15 knots. It was all I could do to not go over while installing the jib in the roller furler. Then it was all I could to not go over while taking it back out and installing it the right way. The furler was jambed (or I thought it was) so we left the sail fully deployed all day. So there is was, sweeping the deck. I thought it WAS a sweeper. It's really a 150% genoa. We didn't have it hoisted far enough into the foil. And, as luck would have it, we couldn't see behind it. Ended up hitting a bright orange buoy the size of a VW bug. It's a big bay. What are the odds? Everybody has stories, but not everybody is willing to sound like an idiot.

Well, have a great time!

Hiee,

Everyone always goes with the same 3 choices it seems ie Mahogony,Teak or Walnut. I am tired of them all mostly due to working with them in construction I suppose plus they are somewhat dark. To answer your question now I have used Birch :D as its quite light in color and with such a cozy (read tight) cabin I wanted it to appear as spacious as possible lol plus I like the grain pattern . Eventually the entire cabin will be painted white inside and someday a headliner installed.

Happy sailing,

Brina
