Depends

I will usually try and go as fast as I can. But my boat is not a scorcher (Oday 23) and if the overtaking boat is significantly larger or is a racier model, I will bow to the inevitable with little fight. A smaller boat? Then its on.

testing your trim

Time to test trim! Let's see how long I can keep him behind me, and whether I can put some water between us!

I would watch as he went by

and give him a nice friendly wave. Then I would continue on my way.

Has already happened in Salem Harbor

I'd so the same as last time. The overtaking boat must steer clear!! Really a "funny as all getout" story. I had only been sailing in Salem Sound about a year, and my bride said to me, I think that lady wants you toget oput of the way. Turning to my starboard aft quarter, I see this somewhat larger boat, with a lady standing in the bow, waving for me to clear the way for their sailboat. Sensing she hadn't aclue what "her" helmsman was about to do, I remained the standon, blew the air horn 5 times and hope they didn't have their diesel running. Sure enough, the helmsman steered clear of my position. On the flip side, if it indeed the was boat similar to mine, most of them would not have been in the same conditions I might be. Bob

Race

He wants to race, Dummy! Exit the cruise mode and trim your sheets!

It's ALWAYS a race

It is a given fact, two sail boats on the same course constitutes a race ! So, now for the answer: Obvioiusly you and your friend were too busy talking and not paying attention to the business at hand. If you were properly trimmed and adjusting trim as shifts and course changed, than this "similar" boat should be of no consequence. On the other hand, I am always trying to catch and pass boats of " similar " design, especially bigger boats that are hauled tight on a beam reach...

Let the race begin

There's nothing wrong with a pleasant day on the water; set a course, trim the sails, crack open a beer and let the boat do the work. Maybe it's my competetive nature (my wife calls it a defect) but any sailboat overtaking me on my heading is not going to go unchallenged.

Give 'em My "Exhaust"

Turn the helm over to my wife - she doesn't like to race BUT she also doesn't like any boats to pass us, either! Like several have said, trim the sheets and give 'em my exhaust. Franklin: That was a good one! Ha ha ha.

to race, or not to race, aye, that is the rub...

See to my sail trim and do my best not to get passed, but if it happens, well, he had waterline on me anyway...

and outrun! If not, test the other skipper's celestial navigation skills by presenting him with a "full moon" as he passes! Then get on the radio and set up a meet so you can present him with the ice cold trophy of his choice! Jack Manning S/V Victim of Fate Atlantic City, NJ

Bad manners or not

when another boat overtakes you to windward, when both are daysailing, lots of sea room etc? When passing, I always go below, leward, of the guy I am passing. If I am passing from astern then I am going faster, so I don't think I should slow the other boat even further by going upwind of him. What say you all?

Like a true pirate...

If this happens tomorrow (International Talk Like a Pirate Day), I'll have to reverse course, come along side, and board the scurvy dog. Hope he has imported beer in the galley.

a worthy opponent

We have what we consider to be a pretty fast boat, a 37.5. In addition, we are former hard core racers. We can't resist an informal race with what we call "worthy opponents". We put in this category Beneteaus with tall rigs, any boat our size or larger with traditional mainsails or racing boats of any kind. We always pass slower boats to leeward so as not to disturb their air. It certainly is lots of fun and it stimulates our minds as nothing else can. Alice A.

depends ...

...on what we're doing. Eating lunch or doing some heavy duty visiting with guests, I'll just hold course or drop down 15-20 degrees to let him know I'm not interested. If my wife's aboard, may do that anyway since she disdains such testosterone filled activity ... sigh ... If it's just me ... here we GO. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake
