i'll soon be in the market for a new sailboat (35'-38')and i'm trying to get a feel for prices that the dealers will accept. there's plenty of sites for cars and rv's but i can't find anything on boats. e.g.- ask this question on an rv forum and you'll get 20 replys suggesting 25-30% off is what you're looking for, so i wonder if sailboats are similar in how dealers mark up their stock. any imput would be appreciated.

I think supply and demand rules

My expectation is that most dealers include some "negotating room" in their asking prices. However, my dealer gave me a price on a leftover Hunter, that included a discount of about 15% off list and then threw in another 20K worth of options installed by the factory. Upon trying for a lower price ;D I faced a stone wall. Two hours later, I realized that I had a deal I could live with (I must be slow..). It was somewhat later after we purchased that I realized that the deal was excellent. If boats are in short supply, you probably can't expect much of a concession. On the other hand, I still think the economy is bad, and willing buyers don't grow on trees. I would expect that you should be able to match a deal that has been offered most recently at any boat show, even if the show is over. If it is a used boat, I think the final price will depend upon whether the dealer actually owns the boat or is just brokering it. Let's see what others think.....

There had been an interesting thread on this (+)

a couple months back, but I'll be darned if I can find it--one gentlemen mentioned he purchased a new Catalina direct (no broker launching, etc.) and found the factory invoice, for lack of a better term. If he's out there, maybe he can repost... We are in the process of purchasing right now, and basically settled on a "boatshow" discounted price, though the broker was generous with our trade-in, telling me they might have been willing to move an additional $2-3K on their discounted price, but probably not more. They have been very helpful to us with additional options, basically getting us those at cost. We're very pleased/comfortable with our deal...I understand they are making money but we feel we're being treated very fairly! Hope this helps... Good luck!! Bill
