Just curious....What is your favorite music to listen to while you sail. If my wife isn't around I usually listen to Jimmy Buffet (she gets very irritable if I listen to too much Buffet around her). If she is around Enya is pretty good or irish music. Once in a while I will throw on a few CDs that I have to sea shanties.

I have been thinking about this also....

My wife and I just got our first boat toward the end of the seasonand only had the chance to use it a few times before it got too cold. Anyway, I plan on getting one of those Sony splash resistant portable MP3/CD players. Anyway I have been trying to thing of some fun relaxing music to put together. Jimmy Buffet is a no brianer for me. My wife can tollerate a bit of it. She's like that "It's 5 O'clock somewhere" Song he did with Alan Jackson. Billy Joel I think would also be good. When I was a kid my step father always had those "Hooked on Classics" tapes in his car. Those might be fun. I am going to look in to picking a couple of those CD's up too. I love Rock, but I am not sure sailing lends itself to metal. :) -- Jeremy

Metal and sailing

Hrm......metal and sailing....Alright, it would work if you were on a beam reach in 4 foot waves, 15 knots of air, scooting across the water in a Lazer or a Force 5. Songs like "Welcome to the Jungle" might work!

It's More Like What Genre

We use our iPod for our music source while sailng. Usually we select a genre of music and go with it. The nice thing about a genre is that all the music flows instead of one rock one classical etc.. The iPod is the best item for lest than a boat buck on our boat. we love it! Buffett = "Singer Songwriter Genre" Mile Davis = "Jazz Genre" etc. The genres we set up are - Jazz Funk Rock/Pop Bluegrass New Age World Singer Songwriter Folk Country Live (for bootlegs) 80's Reggae Soundtrack Classical Click related link to see the iPod intallation pic.

Sirius

We spend a lot of time listening to Margaritaville on Sirius radio. (My wife puts up with Buffet and Jim Morris, who lives in our neighborhood.) They used to have "Vacation" channel which we though was better. Margaritaville has a little too much rock for us and not enough island music. For long passages we like old time radio to while away the hours listening to Dragnet, Green Hornet, and others. We bought a Kenwood tuner which included MP3 play from CDs. After buying the Sirius tuner, we never listen to the MP3s. Bill

sea tunes

Most of the time, I listen to the wind and the gurgle of the bow and stern waves. However, there's a public radio station here that has a five hour blues show on Saturday and Sunday, with a two hour blues/R&B show after it. Dinner music aboard is CDs like "Great Ladies Sing the Blues" a disk full of Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and other great singers doing torch songs and pop standards and the like. Van Morrison, Sade also work, along with Frank and Tony. Classic rock ala CCR and country stuff like Johnny and Hank also works.

If you're a fan spell the name right!

Not to be critical of spelling - I can't spell worth a darn - but it is spelled Buffett - two T's. Though I am also a big fan of buffet - the all you can eat kind.

What else is there? And as the season gets closer to the end, like this year, down to the last week, then both the water rushing by and the Tribe are a can't miss item.

Depends on the mood

It all depends on the mood, but I am a little suprised that no one named Bob Marley. On my ipod, I am slowly putting together a boat playlist. Buffett Marley Billy Joel Jim Morris Bob Dylan DMB Clapton Sinatra pink Floyd Plus more.. I added some SKA music in there as well... Now I guess my question would be.. What kind of speakers/setup do you have on your boat... I am a new boat owner and one of my winter projects is to add sound to the boat... Let me know, -Andrew

IPOD

When I got my first car it was eight track tapes. I had a suitcase full on them. Then came cassets, smaller and room for more tapes. Then came cds, The wifes suv has a 6cd player in it. Now for Christmas I bought her the latest (at least according to the kids 19&24 yo),Ipod. No more looking for the envelope (if you know what I mean). The ipod has a docking station and it can play any song (provided its downloaded on the ipod)on any fm radio. Now I must update the speakers on the boat for sure. As for music.I don't listen to any . The wind and waves are my music.. I really don't care what plays as long as there is wind. The wife likes Buffet and soft rock.

My boat has a pretty good stereo/CD. Speakers in the cockpit as well as the cabin, lots of wattage, etc... came with the boat. I don't think that I have ever turned it on while sailing. I really enjoy the sound of the wind, the water, the sea birds, the hull moving and creating wake, the spray off the bow. I just can't bring myself to turning on the tunes. I guess that I am getting old!

The Stereo Does Not Need To Be Expensive

Here are some things you might want to consider when purchasing a stereo for your boat. Buy an inexpensive car stereo rather than a "Marine" stereo. You'll get more bang for the buck! As long as it is in the cabin where it won't get direct spray you'll be fine. I have used car stereos on all six of my boats with no failures due to moisture ever.. Try and get a stereo with the most power output you can without having to buy an external amp like 22-25 Watts X four. When you put speakers out doors the sound dissapears in 10-12 knots of wind. I'm not cranking it but you want to hear it. Does it have an AUX input? Many aftermarket car stereos come with an AUX input for an MP3 player or an iPod. Be wary of the term iPod ready what this usually meas is that you'll need to shell out another $30-40 for an AUX interface. Look for a stereo with the AUX input on the rear side for a neat clean installation. Then there will be no chance of the plug sticking out the front of the stereo feeding the iPod getting broken off. Try and find a stereo with a front load cd slot. Trust me you don't want one of those fancy stereos where you have to open the front to load a CD you'll break it off in rough weather. I did.. Try and find a stereo with a remote control. We keep ours attached with velcro near the companion way so we can adjust vol etc. without having to go below. -Rod

50% Music and .......

50% Music is fine...country, oldies, instrumentals, etc. THEN: 50% talk radio is nice. But Rap remains Krap...and a boat cant sail straight with RAP on board....just kidding..."maybe not" Happy Sailing....

music

Island music, nice. Jimmy Buffett, good, no one mentioned the Dead? or am I treading on thin ice here? Now for some help... my old stereo that came with my boat is toast. No cd, and no antenna. Speakers shot. won't play tapes. I am seeing stereo and speaker set for about 199.00 at the ususal stores like Boaters World. will that last me awhile? How do you attach an antenna? Split the VHF antenna for FM? what about AM? use the internal antenna? Thanks for the assistance. Long live the Dead. Good Winds, Eric

sirius

I listen to sirius satelite radio mostly. Margaritaville, coffehouse, and jam on are some great stations. I also listen to C.D's nickelback, Kenny Chesney, Sammy Hagar, Silvertide and many moore. The satelite is much easier to deal with though.

Music

I've been collecting albums, tapes, (8 and cassette) and cd's for years, and use a walkman style cd-based mp3 player for them led zep, the who, dead, diamond, buffet, beatles, the band, metallica, joel and far too many others to list, primarily depends on my mood as to what I play Most of the time I grab a bunch of the mp3's and burn them onto a cd without realy looking at what they are, most are duplicated with the artist names so whan I grab a bunch it's not all by the same artist and plays more like a radio. at 128 I can get 8 hours of music on one cd, so it's good that way too. ken.
