What make/size of Anchor for 2005 Hunter 33?

All I can say, when coming into an anchorage in a blow, I will drop the anchor and pay out the appropriate amount of rode. Wind will catch the bow and swing away from the drop location until the rode slack tensions, the Danforth sets hard, the bow stops moving and the stern will swing around and align with the bow. Works every time and even when there is no wind, I will back down until the anchor sets hard. Then I know we're good for the night regardless of wind conditions.

Many years ago our flotilla anchored in Cocktail Cove on Lasqueti Island in calm conditions, but as evening approached, we prepared for a Gale that arrived from Alaska. Tried to sleep, but the wind caused such a racket, was unable to, so spent several hours on deck just experiencing the weather as it jostled the boat. Next morning after the gale had passed and it was time for us to cast off, our windlass struggled to lift the Danforth out of the mud bottom, likely almost to China. One of many experiences.

i wonder what are all these rules and in what book that he talks about?
Try Chapman Piloting (a boating bible) if you're unclear on the concept.

And there are no rules, no enforcement. Just do the best you can with what you've learned from RELIABLE sources.

This refers to NOT listening to power boaters. Like my next door neighbour when he told me he'd been out practising his anchoring. "And what scope are you using ?" ask I. "1/2 inch" replies he. "Shoot me now" mumbles I.

Twenty feet at mid tide gives me enough water and a scope of at least four to one in reasonable weather. That scope increases to five or six to one in sour weather. At zero tide seven feet works, too, such as in Watmough Bay or Garrison Bay.

Or 7ft of line to the buoy?
Hah! No mooring ball here, John. At zero tide, seven feet allows plenty of water with a five foot draft. Most of the depth at Watmough is ten feet at mid tide. I wanted to be close to shore with a short distance to row. Besides, it's just mud.

To continue the drift here...I get angry when I see someone with a small float tied to his anchor. As the boats anchored there swing, someone is sure to snag his goofy float. Once I saw someone with a float snag it himself on his own prop when the tide changed, caught his anchor and dragged it, made my day. In tidal areas around here you absolutely need a kellet to keep from wrapping your rode around your keel, unless you are all chain. To get back to the original question, it seems there are two choices if you have a plum stem and want to avoid banging it up with your anchor: 1) Add a bowsprit, or 2) Fabricate a stainless suit of armor for your stem. If you go with the bow sprit, you could also carve a busty lady to hang on there.

I have a 2005 Hunter 33 and replaced the Danforth with a Delta spade anchor, 22lbs. I kind of wish I had gone up to the 35lb however the salesperson at West Marine talked me out of it. The 22lbs is rated for boats 25'-41' so we are right in the middle. We sail in the lower Chesapeake with mostly sandy/muddy bottom and have never had a problem setting or holding us nicely in place. It works well on the stock roller and windlass. I'm pleased with it overall but would have only considered larger for overnight on the hook I suppose. Sorry I don't have a better picture.

Two Sails, it is size but also it is displacement.

I agree with you that a 35 would help you sleep with less tension. Perhaps there is a boat owner with a 20 something boat who would love to buy your 22lb anchor. That would give you seed money for the anchor you really desire.

lots of testing with great video. conclusion clearly is to run, not walk, away from the claw anchor made by lewmar. a poor copy of the bruce which also tests poorly.

my backup anchor is a bruce. i was bummed with it's testing.
still happy with my danforth for up here on the lakes. it's 180 deg reset is just fine in the tests and with my own use over the last 60 years.
