The Crimson Pirate

It might not be tthe best sailing movie, but the Crimson Pirate, with Burt Lancaster is one of the best swashbuckling movies.Even has a submarine with human power.

What, No Pirates of the Caribbean?

I can tell you guys have no young kids at home, or you would have been forced at some point to see the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie with Johnny Depp et al. Not only do these guys do some snappy squarerigger sailing and put on a better battle than "Master and commander", but they are hands down the best pirate characters ever to grace the screen. Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa is the best serious pirate character in film history, but even he manages to be funny in the right places. Rent "Curse of the Black Pearl" now and watch the new sequel "Dead man's chest" this weekend. AAARHH!

Rich-P/C is a "Given"

Rich, I think we all pretty much figure that "Pirates .." is a given. Try playing the soundtrack to the movie while sailing sometime-it almost magically pipes up the wind! Our crew can hardly wait for the opening tomorrow of "Dead Man's Chest" and I hear #3 is in editing already!. No doubt the collectors edition DVD set will be out just before Christmas of '08

Here's a few more.....

Message In A Bottle...basically a love story, but it involves sailing. Visitors...a young woman sailing around the world alone encounters ghosts or is it just her imagination? Calm At Sunset....not really a sailing movie, but a good story about a young man who wants to make his living from the sea. Dead Calm....murder at sea. Unfortunately, there aren't too many good sailing movies available these days.

Favorite line......

"If Walt Cushman beats me inta hahba, I'll hang myself with an eel!" Joe wrote: re: captains courageous et.al. there is no more exciting sailing scene in movies than the opening segment of this movie where the two fishing schooners are racing each other back to port....

Summer Rental / Capt. Ron

I was hoping to find some more movies like Summer Rental and Capt. Ron for the family to watch. A sailing theme, and fun for the whole family ("I gave up a power tool for those")

Pirates Sound Track

My wife took the kids to see the new Pirates of Caribbean movie, and then she went out and bought the movie soundtrack. Its pretty good to listen to while sailing.

Master and Commander

The Far Side of the World very interesting and honest look into the Royal navy at the turn of the ninteenth century. And if you have a good home theater system, the sound is awesome - very immersing to hear the ship creak all around you I liked it so much, I bought all 20+ of Patrick O'Brians Aubrey/Maturin novels. Then I bought a sailboat. :)

"Row well and live number 41"

Lots of great sailing movies out there, the Sea Hawk is probably the greatest swash buckler, Master and Commander really captures the time and era, Pirates of the Caribbean, well it was just fun, and of course don't forget "The Vikings". Just a little classic movie trivia, there is a non sailing movie that had a brief sailing scene in it with the above classic line. Anyone know it?

Peter is correct.

It was from Ben Hur. Nothing like spending a few years as a galley slave to make you appreciate being above decks...

Sailing movie

For great sailing esthetics, take away the scenario from "Message in a Bottle" and you have a beautiful sailing movie. Old wooden ships with cinemaphotography filmed in Maine (takes place in the Carolinas), boat building, refurbishing and sailing.
